Does the point system skew the final preps?

After rewatching the Santa Anita derby I am second guessing Justify and Bolt. I think Bolt was already in the Derby so knowing place was secured he wasn’t pressured much finishing up. Justify had to perform that day to get in.

I wouldn’t think an owner or trainer would want to dismiss a potential G1 victory. I felt Castellano was beating Bolt like a rented mule early in the stretch. The horse actually did fire based on his solid final fractions but Justify had plenty in the tank after an easy trip. Bolt deceptively lost some ground but big picture was still hauling oats. Justify should have more pressure this weekend. The more I look at that race the more I think Bolt is, at a minimum, a must use in the trifecta.
