Last year's move to an ungraded turf race apparently failed to deliver. This year the race will be back on the main track, a $300,000 G3 at 1 1/16.

glad its back on dirt, but 1 1/16. I remember when the Super Derby used to be a prep for the BC classic for 3 y/o only. Tiznow broke the track record then won the classic

The Parx race, funded by a casino, killed it.

I think it might have been the first million dollar race on dirt, after the Arlington Million turf race, also it was ran at a mile and a quarter too. A great edition was Gate Dancer running down loose on the lead, Precisionist, at the wire in 1984. I remember it well because I played Precisionist on top..

Essentially the Penn Derby is the Super Derby now, it all comes down to money, they increase it to a million dollars and they would have a great field again.

Going into the 2016 race, on dirt, the three favorites were Texas Chrome (the winner), Mo Tom, and Dalmore.

In last year's version the winner, Mr. Misunderstood, turned out to be a pretty decent turf runner.

Personally I'm glad it's going back to dirt. While the race hasn't attracted the really big names in years, I could always count on seeing a few horses that had competed in the TC series.
