My friend owns the 7 horse in that race with one of our trainers Penny Pearce and when they got back to the paddock he said the spill was much worse then it initially looked. This is a tough time right now for this jockey and his family. There was a report he is in a coma but I cannot substantiate that. I pray for Jose and his family.

Very sad.

According to Terry Meyocks, the national manager of the Jockeys' Guild, the last rider to die from injuries sustained in a race was Mario Chavez at Will Rogers Downs in October 2017. He was the 156th rider to perish from race-related injuries since the Guild began keeping such statistics in 1940.

Count at 157.

Prayers for Flores' family.

That is why I did the update from Steve Byk that he was incorrect to say he passed away. Racing Nation updated their original post.

Words are hard to come by. Jose has been a riding force in my backyard for at least 20 years. Still, I had no idea he was 56....

My heart goes out to his family.

You are right Mike.

My 'source' was a Parx insider who rode Joanne McDaid when she rode at Suffolk years ago, I wrongly assumed he had the right info.

This morning I called him about this and he said he had spoken to Steve Byk earlier... the info of which he relayed to me ... sheesh.

McDaid is waiting for family to come from Florida, as per the Dunleavy tweet, for the final goodbyes, I'm told.

Parx assumed the worst based on the Steve Byk statement which he later retracted on Horse Racing Nation.

And Twitter's most vociferous, unhinged jockey critic has been strangely silent the last couple of days.

Truly saddened by this news as Parx is pretty much in my back yard. I've seen him ride live many times over the course of the past number of years and have even been by the winners circle to congratulate him with a fist bump along with friends of mine. RIP Jose ...prayers go out to family as well.
