View Full Version : NHC Mandatory 8: Act Like You are There

One of my life's passions is to have a seat at the NHC.

And as they always say "Act like you are there". So...., here goes.

R2 Oaklawn:
An uninteresting race overall outside of it being contested between 11 horses. I see 5 to 7 free kicks. I look for max effort for :9: and the Asmussen barn.
:9:/:5:/:1:

R7 Tampa Bay Downs: I like the claim and roll move with the :2:. Maybe the :8: for 2nd as my alternate?
:2:/:8:

R9 Gulfstream
Love the :9:. Can't see anything else in this race.
:9:

R11 Gulfstream:
Race full of career Maidens that can't run a lick. Toss up between the :4: and :11: IMHO. Give me the better jock.
:11:/:4:

R9 Oaklawn:
Good race for barns sending out horses that win them money. Maybe the toughest race of the 8. Fell for the supposed "class" of the :10: to get through here. Certainly not convinced. Good betting race.
:10:/all

R7 Golden Gate:
Near bottom end claimer at GG. Almost assuredly chalk, but that is zero fun this late in the game.
:1:

R8 Santa Anita:
Nice race of next out Derby hopefuls. Who is worth a shit? Liked Emboldened's race the best. No way we get 7/2 here.
:6:

R9 Santa Anita:
Good race. Not the best animals, but good enough. I see the last waking up the :3: on the turf last out. They are sticking to it, and so am I. Wide open.
:3::7:

In a nutshell, I haz :9::2::9::11::10::1::6::3:

Much the best to all our friends on here playing live tomorrow. (I'm more than jealous).

What is the bet required for each race in this?

Sounds like a fun play-along, cranking up the furnace and pretending those snow piles outside my windows are palm trees.

I believe this a mythical $2 WP contest.

No idea. All I know is a $10K bankroll and these are the mandatory races for each contestant.

I think it is a fun play along, because I'll be there some day. :headbanger:

Tough race. I picked this one because of the tote action in the doubles, and I thought he did more running than the :1: in their last race.

Not to sound like Tony Robbins, but you are good enough.

I've tried to get into this field 14 times. 3 times I was right there waiting on my flight to Vegas.

We all lose. I'll be there. Just a matter of time.

Cheer up. You only played the mandatories. You'd have killed them in the optionals.

Besides, just playing the mandatories you beat Christian Hellmers on one of his tickets, and Kevin Cox on one of his. And you were just barely behind John Conte!

Super Saturday is here. :jump:

I doff my cap to NTRA/NHC for putting together a card of tough and competitive races.

R6 Tampa: :2: Be Mine was favored 4 back in the G2 San Clemente. There is no way she is 7/2 come post time. :3: Galileo Gal is the concern from the ever tough Casse barn.

R6 Aqueduct: Nice of them to extend an olive branch to the NYRA circuit and Aquedump:pound:. And no better race than a state bred purse for horses who don't deserve to be running for this much money. I'll go with :10: Rossie Val as she just beat better. :3: Calculated Risker is the fall back plan with Arroyo on board.

R3 Santa Anita: :7: Gustnado is off of a near 10 month layoff and is dropping off the cliff in class. I'll jump on board, but highly doubt we'll get 8/1. :1: Maestro Dearte is your classic closing turf horse, and is of obvious concern with Nakatani in the irons.

R10 Gulfstream: The G3 Suwanee River may well be the race of the day. Hard to overlook any Kitten with the Ramsay connections in the :9:, but I'm going with :5: Dream Dancing if she can ever get back to that Del Mark Oaks form 3 back. :3: Midnight Crossing comes in off an impressive win last out as she cranked through :24s like it was nobodies business winning wire to wire in the G3 Frankel. Really tough race.

R11 Gulfstream: :5: Mojovation looks to be the class of this field, but we have hardly seen the best of what this group has to offer. Another Ramsay/Kitten in the :3: looms ominous. :8: Sand Dancer should also be tough.

R12 Gulfstream: Bust out your trustiest dart in a race that is more wide open than Stormy Daniels. Really difficult to put forth any opinion on this race, but I'll go with the :2: Here's to Mike as he gets back to his preferable 8 1/2 panel distance. :6: Conquest Sandman makes a lot of sense and :4: Donation off the claim is very interesting at a likely price.

R7 Golden Gate: Alright, I'll take the Euro with EMD4ME's favorite jockey in Couton on board in the :4: Consolida. We really have no idea what any of these are quite yet :7: Mapit looks dangerous out of the King's barn.

R9 Santa Anita: Going with a bomb in the :5: Taco Tuesday who has yet to run a bad race and look for the rest of these to beat him. Exotics players may want to single the :9: Conqueror in the 2 hole as he has 6 lieftime Place efforts in 13 career starts.

I finished 119th out of 695 entries with $151.60

The race that made all the difference for me was the 12th at Gulfstream on Friday. Cryogenic, the 8 horse, burst through on the rail, took the lead by half a length with probably 100 yards to go and for some reason slowed up, losing by a nose at 23-1. If I hit that race and you assume I bet the same horses I bet after that race (just to make a point) I'd have had $193 and been in 30th place at the end of Saturday and I'd have been in the finals.

I'll say this. If you are a first-timer, the Friday session can be overwhelming. I made one stupid mistake. You have to bet 18 races, 8 of which are mandatory and 10 of which are optional. I had a horse I liked quite a bit, went to bet it and found out I had already used up my 10 optional bets. Of course, the horse won.

There was one guy who missed getting to the finals by 20 cents. Imagine how he felt.

119th doesn't sound brilliant, but considering 70th place gets into the finals, I wasn't that far away, something like $20.

I'm not sure I'll do it again. Handicapping, then nine hours at the races, then more handicapping, then not much sleep and then do it again.

I'll give NTRA a lot of credit--it was a well run operation.

I was there a couple of years ago and that room is full of distractions. Two guys at my table essentially played from their rooms (and I know a few others played from the sportsbook). I would probably do that if I ever get back.

It is a lot of fun, when I went it was Thurs-Sat, how did you like Fri-sun?

I actually liked Fri-Sun. Thursday and Monday turned out to be good days to travel. The cards were best on Saturday. One thing I learned is that it is ok to bet favorites, but not as a steady diet.

One of the guys at my table disappeared almost right away. One guy at the table never said a word. One guy at our table made it to the finals.

That's pretty impressive, IMHO. Good job. Both you and Baron Star Greg made out all right, considering the competition. Did they have a consolation tourney on Sunday?

Last year when I was there a guy from my table finished up high enough in that to get a check. Another guy at my table was a former winner of the NHC, who didn't qualify, and hung around his buddy at the table. I did okay on Friday with the mandatory races, but was totally wiped out and tanked most of Saturday. It's hard to manually 'cap so many races.

Since you learned a lot this year, you might want to give it one more shot. Last year was my first time qualifying, but the State of Washington shut us out of online tournaments last fall, so I didn't get as many chances to get in. If I move to a more horse racing friendly state, I'll try again.

It's a lot of fun, though I think it would have been easier to win for us wildly erratic handicappers back when it was a two day format. This year there was tons of chalk on Sunday - hard to make a move except downwards.

There were a ton of first timers in the NHC this year, and quite a few names in the finals I didn't recognize. Perhaps there's still hope for us geezers.

They did have a consolation tournament on Sunday. I think a lot of people were gassed by then and only put in a half-hearted effort. If I remember, the guy who won the consolation had a bit over $100 in 10 races.

There was almost no way to beat the leader, Chris Littlemore, given the prices on Sunday. One of the really tough things is potentially having to bet races at tracks you don't often play. For me that was Fair Grounds, Laurel, Oaklawn and Gulfstream. I did a lot of work watching repays before the tournament, and that definitely helped.

I might do it again. I'll make a decision once I recover from last weekend. At least I didn't embarrass myself.
