With Gun Runner now retired, the title of best older dirt runner is up for grabs, and West Coast has to be considered among the best. He ran well in the Classic and again today.

WEST COAST turned out to be a real star. i suspect that after winning The Pegasus, we may see a change of heart from GUNRUNNER team and they will meet up again in Dubai. if they do change their mind i suspect it will be a last minute decision. also, should they change their minds, Dubai will definitely be the very last race.

If they go to the DWC, then they have to give up the 2018 breeding season, so it'd make no sense to retire after the DWC. They may as well run the entire year.

They have stud plans, and surely have already booked mares to him. That's a lot of contracts they'd have to get out of. At $70k, he'll make about $10m in stud fees for the year. I think they count their blessings and retire as planned.

I thought the 3yo finalists for the Eclipse were very weak on accomplishments. It's nice to see that the one they named champion stepped up in this race and made the championship for last year look more deserving.

Two weeks? The race isn't until March 31. We're talking about him starting stud in mid-April. That's 2 months of a 4-month season. No way. They lose all their stallion contracts (if not sued over any of them). If starting stud after the DWC was a good idea, people would've been doing it every year.

They bring as early as they can. The maiden mares, barren mares, and early foaling mares will be there as soon as the doors open.

All breed at first opportunity (not counting foal heats, which most stud farms won't accept) because it gives them longer if they don't get in foal (to return a time or two to try again).

Most all the mare owners that were planning on going to Gunrunner will not accept him retiring in mid-April. They will go elsewhere. The only mares he'd get that way are those who don't plan on being able to get a first cover until after that time anyway, and those would likely be last minute contracts because they'd have to bank now that he's not shooting blanks instead of knowing he's good to go when he does retire in mid-April.

It is a very bad way to start off his breeding career. They need the huge book to be competitive these days. This would cut his book in half. It ain't happening. If they change their mind about retiring, then he'll race out the year, not retire in mid-April, and have to appease a lot of people who signed contracts to breed to him.
