I called some of my buddies on the islands, half of them didn't get the alert while 3 did. Those that did immediately went to cable news and decided it wasn't real.

I hope they went to CNN. They're always reliable. :coffee:

Probably not or MSNBC either. They are retired veterans and like to hear the truth.

My neighbor has a sister in Hawaii. She called him crying, to say goodbye. She was in her bathtub with her daughter going apeshit.

I wouldn’t want to be the guy who hit the wrong button.........

This is some pretty messed up stuff.

And really, what's the point of sending out the message? What are people supposed to do to mitigate against a nuclear ICBM?

Unless you have an underground bunker, and I would venture to say most people on Hawaii do not, then what's the point?

I guess it's to say "Hey, at least we warned you...what you do with your last 10-15 minutes here on earth is up to you..."

What are people supposed to do to mitigate against a nuclear ICBM?The most likely target is Pearl Harbor or the city of Honolulu, both on the island of Oahu. If you are on Oahu and survive the blast with no injuries (or minimal injuries) then the big problem is radioactive fallout. The trade winds are (to my understanding) reliable and come from the northwest. So get to the northwest coast of the island where the trades will blow the radiation away from you. Have a portable radio to get news and possibly directions from civil defense. Same advice for those on islands north of Oahu.

If you are on the big island of Hawaii get to the west or southwest coast. If you have a seaworthy boat then sail west, then head north to one of the islands north of Oahu. If you have enough food and water (or a desalination pump or a solar still) then another possibility is to sail south and try for Tahiti.

Yields are likely to not be very high so depending on topography, epicenter, and burst type/altitude you might be surprised. This all hinges on if NK can even put one on a missile which is highly suspect.

Of course the pentagon is not going to tell us how accurate our systems are but I would hazard a guess that a U.S. missile launched from Wyoming could hit a small car. But then NK is not trying for military effectiveness but terrorism and for that a miss of ten miles is good enough.

If they have thermonuclear then their yield is probably 100 or more times that of the Hiroshima device.

... and that would survive reentry, which is even more suspect at this time. From what I've read, none of their "successful" launches to date included a successful reentry. Reentry is considered the toughest part to do, and NK is estimated to acquire this ability sometime in 2018.

And of course Trump is getting blamed for this as well. :pound:

I guess he isn't taking NOKO seriously.

“Donald Trump is taking too long,” she told CNN. “He's not taking this threat seriously. There's no time to waste.”

This is what Joe Biden would call a Big F Deal!
How in the hell can this happen????

What safeguards are in effect to prevent it?
We could damn well start a war with incompetence like this allowed to go on.

I think most are pegging their tests in the 20-100 kiloton range.

As far as targeting... the North Koreans need a missile first. Then they need a warhead. And then. And then... my buddy in who works in Naval Intel (I honestly don't know what he does) is stationed at Pearl is infinitely more worried about Tsunamis than the North Koreans.

Surviving an exchange though is certainly possible. Where I grew up there were three targets in my city and we would likely have taken 2 hits on ground and on air burst. Both, assuming the Russians can reliably hit what they aim at, would have been to the North of where I usually was. The North Koreans would be trickier because I have little faith in anything related to their program. A miss by a few miles to the North or South would result in pretty light damage all things considered.

Can't we all agree that nuclear alerts should not be put into the hands of state govt, but should be in the hands of the Feds and central command. There were so many things that went wrong yesterday that Hawaii should be embarrassed. One guy could send this out. Improper training. No "all clear" protocol in place. People went into the sewers to escape the holocaust. What a cluster.

You would think for something like this they would have a "double positive" procedure, meaning two people would have to both hit the button on separate computers.

When you have a system where one person's human error can cause this type of panic, you need a better fail safe.

Is Trump getting criticized for not firing back?

Isn't that line from "The Bedford Incident", instead of "Fail Safe"?Mebbe I is wrong... or maybe you were quoting "Bedford". Fail Safe, btw, had the dumbest most unrealistic ending in film history.

SPOILER ALERT!! (only 53 years later:D)

In 'Fail Safe", due to a series of unfortunate circumstanses, a American nuclear bomber drops the big one on Moscow. After that the President (played by Henry Fonda) orders the Air Force to nuke New York City as some sort of apology to the Russkies..

Bet he didn't get re-elected.

NO WAY it could have been an accident. Deleting a file on your computer requires two replies of yes.

what a coincidence that Japan issues a false North Korea missile alert just a couple days after Hawaii. Some are wondering if the governments did it just to see people reactions...

Maybe NK hackers are breaching these missile warning systems and generating the false alerts...and if that were true, of course no government would admit this to be the cause...but it sounds quite plausible, does it not?

My buddies over on Oahu say that a drill was scheduled. Maybe he didn't know it was a drill and just freaked out. Who knows but when shit settles down there are going to be some lawsuits.
