From the cited article "The business model does not reward a more informed readership or a more productive political dialogue — it rewards clicks and views, however they are generated". This applies to entities beyond social media including the sports media as ESPN's NBA coverage is causing their coaches to circle the wagons. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2753138-steve-kerr-calls-lavar-ball-the-kardashian-of-the-nba

When cryptocurrency becomes common place and everyone with an internet account uses it regularly then I can see these social media sites charging a nominal fee.

Think about it. If a company could get a billion people to spend $1 per year as an annual fee and in return use a site with no ads I think people would jump all over it.

If the fee was paid by cryptocurrency there would be virtually no transaction fee for micro-transaction. There might be other ways for the company to accept payment without a micro-transaction transaction cost.
