Jim Nabors, ‘Gomer Pyle: USMC’ Star, Dies at 87
Nabors, who moved to Hawaii in 1976 and owned a Maui macadamia plantation for more than two decades, married his long-time partner, Stan Cadwallader, in a Seattle ceremony in January 2013, a month after same-sex marriage had been legalized in Washington state.

I kind of figured he had been in poor health for a while since he stopped signing "Back home again in Indiana" before the Indy 500 the last couple years. Wonder if he was bothered by being known so much for being Gomer Pyle? Rest in Peace.

"So long Gomer, hey Jim Nabors!"

The thread's title is evidence of why he would feel that way.

We lived in Hawaii for 22 years. My bride is an animal behaviorist and she used to teach puppy classes on Oahu. One day she received a call about a new puppy named "Tank" and was asked when her next class was going to start. She did not know it was Jim Nabor's dog at the time because Stan called. Stan showed up at the next class and I remember Carol coming home that night and saying she knew the new puppy HAD to be Tank because of his size.

A few years later Jim called and asked if he could do some private training at his residence. Up until then she had never met him because Stan always brought Tank to class. Jim and Stan owned a house on Black Point Road, big time expensive houses there in Kahala, and they asked Carol to train Tank not to run out the fence.

They bred Tank to "Aunt B." She lived on his plantation on Maui. They named all the puppies after Mayberry characters and he would bring all of them back and forth from Maui to Oahu. That's where they called on Carol again and she did private trainings just with Jim, Stan and all the puppies.

I met and talked with Jim many times when I dropped Carol off and picked her up at the Black Point house. He seemed like such a nice man and Carol thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent helping him with his herd of English Staffordshire puppies. RIP Jim.
