Reminded me of a pool table in a real dive I used to drink at back in '71.

Can't figure out why a place with so much rain has such crappy looking turf courses

I suspect they spend next to nothing in time or $$$ for any upkeep there. Do they even time the races?

The GPW turf course is off-center relative to the dirt - which makes you cross-eyed watching horses run on it.

Mountaineer Park is the same way - but say this for Mountaineer: It has a 7-furlong turf course and they run 7-furlong turf races on it! Fort Erie does too, and so does Turf Paradise - so long as it stays in business, which might not be for much longer.

Very poor agronomy practices.
Give me that turf course and a decent maintenance budget for a growing season and I'll have it back to where it should be.

Bingo!!
I see that wasteland of a turf course and I see a limited maintenance budget

Water is just one requirement.
Good fertilization, Soil additives that encourage deeper root growth.
Overseeding with another more durable bermudagrass hybrid.
A heavy application of iron.

I played there last year on BC weekend and was looking forward to it again til I saw it the other day. It looked like somebody burnt the damn thing. Pathetic. The other Gulfstream shreds their course with overracing too. It's a shame.

We raced on the turf last week my horse hated it. We raced on the main track yesterday and finished 2nd, big difference.

I liked it better when it was Calder - all the way around.

On the bright side, it gives GP two months off and will help its turf course by opening day Dec 2nd .......;)

Isnt this a case that the summer grass (bermuda) is dying out and needs to be overseeded? I assume the meet is coming to an end soon and there is no reason to do that process.

I refuse to bet that track with that goofy camera angle.

It does seem odd. They shouldn't be racing on grass the last couple of months before the Gulfstream meet, give it time to heal.

Maybe they should name Gulfstream Calder Race Course East.:)

Exactly. They should just stop turf racing for a while.

I'm sure you realize Calder just leases the spot to Stronach(so they can maintain the casino status), they aren't putting a penny into it, if Frank wants to spend a few grand to make the track better that is up to him. Until then the turf course looks like a sandlot from Bad News Bears...and they have another 4 weeks of racing on it.

Stronach put in a multi-million dollar sprinkler system to water the turf course at "Calder." It is controlled on and off by the official timing system at the track.

Florida racing should put and end to this. Pull some dates from Gulfstream and give them to Hialeah. Problem solved!

Also Calder would lose the ability to operate the casino if they don't have 40 days of racing. Brunetti and Stronach would never agree to do anything together.

What takeout rate would Hialeah use. Last time they ran thoroughbreds Hialeah's rates made Parx look like they were giving away free money.

With no grandstand and a turf course that looks like it got hit by wildfires, GPW doesn't deserve dates. Especially when it's obvious why they want them and put forth such little effort. Even a razed Hialeah looks better than this place. The Florida racing commission can't dictate dates and takeout? Then what good are they for?
