Finger Lakes 20.4 First Quarter

I just bet on a two year old filly, Willie U, in a $15,000 maiden claiming race at Finger Lakes and she went :20.4 to the first quarter under pressure and won. That seems odd. Does anyone follow Finger Lakes closely? Did you ever see a first quarter that fast?

We probably get one or two a year here in Southern California.

Remember, running starts and all of that. The quarterhorse First Moonflash went 440 yards in 20.27 from a standing start! That's blazing.

That has to be a mistake. Belmont also had a sub 21 opening 1/4 posted earlier today which was later corrected.

It was corrected, but the 1:09 final time looks very fishy. There is generously 0% chance that is correct, probably less.

Thanks CJ. I figured it was a mistake. When I saw the 20.4 I figured the filly would collapse but she drew off in the stretch and I knew it was too good to be true.

Certainly it is possible over this track, just don't think it was possible for this group, particularly with the adjusted opening quarter of 23+.

Oh crap, I just realized that was a 5.5 race...egg on my face. Never occured to me the horses could be that slow. :)

A 22 Beyer is sure not the slowest ever at the thumb.
I used to see Beyer Bagels more than a few times.

When I have to announce 1:09 for 5.5 furlongs I like to add that's quick for 6 furlongs but slowwww for 5.5 furlongs. I used to do it a lot until an owner Cecil Fiske, who since has passed away. gave me grief about it when one of his fillies got the call. The poor guy had to be ready to mute that part of the call when showing the replay to his friends. It wasn't the first time I have been muted and I know it won't be the last.

I remember once, back in the mid 80's, the track was in terrible shape - the inside 7-8 paths were a bog. Turning for home, all the rider would swing wide. One race, one horse came out so wide he was on the outside rail. Ross Morton comment, "So and So sneaks through on the golden rail!" :lol:

Tony...there are only 3 race-announcers that I never mute...and you are one of them. :ThmbUp:

I timed the race twice and got right around 1:09 each time.

I gave it a 15 Beyer. :pout:
