This past weekend I re-watched the George Harrison documentary that came out a few yrs ago, and when fellow Wilbury Roy Orbison died from a heart attack in 1988, Harrison called Petty and sardonically said, "Aren't you glad it wasn't you?"
Sigh. :(

I thought his best was Refugee, but all his stuff was good.
The Traveling Wilbury's were a good venue for him.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are legends in my mind.
And Runnin' Down A Dream has got to be one of the best 'driving in my car' songs ever.
Man, I'm gettin' old.

Just saw him in July with my wife here at DTE, an outside venue in the Detroit area. I will say that they played the greatest version of this song I have seen in the many times that I have seen Tom over the years. Sad to think it will be my last memory of him. My wife is a huge fan. RIP

from LAPD via twitter CBS news
Tom Petty, the rocker best known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is clinging to life in a Los Angeles hospital, according to TMZ. An earlier report which confirmed the singer's death, and which CBS reported, has since been clarified. CBS News reported information obtained officially from the LAPD about Tom Petty. The LAPD later said it was not in a position to confirm information about the singer and that "initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources." In that statement, the LAPD also apologized for "any inconvenience in this reporting."

I guess that answers the question of whether he has died or not.
It's been a bad day. Several bad accidents/news in racing today too.

Hard to imagine any Petty fan out there not having seen the tremendous 2007 4-hour documentary about Tom and the Heartbreakers, but if you haven't, it's available streaming on Netflix. I will be watching it again this weekend. :(

So many great songs to choose from. I'd probably pick Mary Jane. Saw him at the Akron Rubber Bowl guessing 1986-1987 with Dylan and the Dead. Last time I saw him was 5-6 years ago. Steve Winwood opened. So many good times. A true Hall Of Famer that the world of rock will miss. And I know i will miss. Thanks Tom. You always rocked the house.

So, so sad for fans and music lovers everywhere.
Never a good time to die but I actually thought Petty was older, which makes my pain more pronounced.
RIP to a true legend, Tom Petty.

I am partial to one of his solo albums, Full Moon Fever. It features the singles I Won't Back Down, Free Fallin' and Runnin' Down a Dream.
I saw him at the Nassau Coliseum way back when, I have to say one of the best concerts I've ever been to. R.I.P. Tom, you will be missed.

Went to Chive fest Dallas two years ago, Jake Owen (whom I'd never heard of at the time) performed a few Petty songs that night. It was a pleasant surprise. Even tho Petty had cut way back on performances and new work, I'll really miss him.

Little late to the TP tributes but my favorite of his was from 1981.When I first heard this, I thought it would be a hit but it only "skyrocketed" to 79 on the singles charts.Great tune about unrequited love. :rip: to Tom Petty, an all time great.

I like guitar solos, especially those guitarists who played with Steely Dan...Here's a couple from Jay Graydon and Georg Wadenius that really are masterclass:

On the plus side, earlier in the evening SNL ran a replay of a very old episode in which Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were the musical guest. They played Refugee and Don't Do Me Like That.

Sometimes these deaths hit you as a personal loss that you wouldn't have expected and only know when it happens. Petty was surprisingly one for me.
I haven't watched SNL in many years, but wouldn't have minded seeing that.
