I've seen so many tracks close and was wondering how many are still operating as thoroughbreds only or mixed species with thoroughbreds?

Belmont
Aquaduct
Saratoga
Parx
Keeneland
Churchill
Pimlico
Laural
Santa Anita
Del Mar
Golden Gate
Arlington
Gulfstream
Oak lawn
Hot Springs

Those are just the big ones that I know are still around. Trying to find how many tracks are operating either big league or bush league. If you know one list it.

I have made figures for 72 this year including the new Century Downs in North America. There are several for which I don't make figures that run as well. Hazel Park and Wyoming Downs come to mind. I'm not sure if there are any that will run that haven't yet this year.

Some of these are non-betting fairs or steeplechase meets, and some are QH only, but the first place to check is the DRF's racing dates:

I hope this means you also skipped the figure making process for the tracks listed below since they are either on par or below Michigan handle levels

Fair Meadows
Tulsa
SunRay Park
Albuquerque
Arapahoe
Assiniboia
Fonner

Nope, I do all of them. The reason...they actually time the races. I tried to do Hazel initially. It was impossible. The races were hand timed, no fractions, and the hand timing was horrible. I don't have the time to deal with that. Fair Meadows Tulsa is similar, but I do them because many of the horses show up at Remington and Will Rogers. Where do the horses that run at Hazel go? I haven't seen any of them.

For the record, I've had a grand total of zero requests for Hazel Park figures.

LOL!

"new Century Downs in North America"?

I went to a Breeders Cup back in the 90's at Santa Anita in Western North America (had a great time, too). Is it near there?

It is in Western Canada, I think Alberta, and is a replacement for Northlands Park.

Century Downs is just outside of Calgary, Alberta.It opened in 2015 and has had harness meets, the thoroughbreds started a couple of weekends ago.

Actually, it's just north of Calgary, and is a replacement for the late lamented Stampede Park. (Edmonton is @ 170-180 miles north of Calgary). And, yes, both are in North America!

Gotcha, thanks. The North Ametica was for the 72 tracks, not just Century Downs... poorly written on my part.

HP is my home track, been to all race days. Didn't realize the issue with hand timing, maybe on some of the 6.5f races and races over 1m?

Most of the shippers race from Thistledown, Mahoning Valley, Mountaineer, and other tracks nearby.

Correct. I just added it to my collection list on opening day (first ever for thoroughbreds) this past Saturday.

Northlands Park (Edmonton) is racing in 2018, but will be replaced by a newer track in the Edmonton area in 2019. I was told that the same company (Century) who was involved with the Calgary track will be involved in the new Edmonton track.

OK, here is an attempt at what should be pretty much a comprehensive list. Subject tracks have pari-mutuel wagering and have and/or plan to run in 2017 in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Tracks which usually run only QH races, but will run an occasional TB race if they can draw enough entries are marked with an *. Not included are tracks like Lincoln (NE), Atokad (NE), and Fairplay Park (NE) which ran 3 or less races for the purpose of meeting law requirements to continue their simulcasting license. Also not included are pari-mutuel jump meets like Fairhill (MD)

AZ (3) --> Turf Paradise, Rillito Park, Sonoita
AR (1) --> Oaklawn Park
CA (9) --> Santa Anita, Del Mar, Golden Gate, Los Alamitos, Santa Rosa, Pleasanton, Sacramento, Fresno, Ferndale
CO (1) --> Arapahoe
DE (1) --> Delaware Park
FL (3) --> Gulfstream Park, Gulfstream Park West (Calder), Tampa Bay Downs
ID (7) --> Pocatello Downs*, Sandy Downs*, Rupert*, Jerome*, Malad*, Burley*, Blackfoot*
IL (3) --> Arlington Park, Fairmount Park, Hawthorne
IN (1) --> Indiana Downs
IA (1) --> Prairie Meadows
KY (5) --> Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Ellis Park, Kentucky Downs, Turfway Park
LA (4) --> Evangeline Downs, Delta Downs, Louisiana Downs, Fair Grounds
MA (1) --> Suffolk Downs
MD (3) --> Laurel Park, Pimlico, Timonium
MI (1) --> Hazel Park
MN (1) --> Canterbury Park
MT (2) --> Great Falls, Miles City
NE (3) --> Fonner Park, Columbus, Horsemen's Park Omaha
NV (2) --> Ely (White Pine Raceway), Elko
NJ (2) --> Monmouth Park, Meadowlands
NM (5) --> Albuquerque, Sunland Park, Zia Park, Sun Rey Downs, Ruidoso
NY (4) --> Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Finger Lakes, Saratoga
ND (2) --> Chippewa Downs (Belcourt), North Dakota Horse Park
OH (4) --> Thistledown, Mahoning Valley, Belterra Park, Van Wert
OK (3) --> Remington Park, Will Rogers Downs, Fair Meadows Tulsa
OR (6) --> Portland Meadows, Grants Pass, Union, Prineville, Tillamook, Burns
PA (3) --> Parx, Penn National, Presque Isle Downs
SD (2) --> Fort Pierre, Brown County Fair (Aberdeen)
TX (4) --> Lone Star, Sam Houston, Retama, Gillispie Fair (Fredericksburg)
VA (1) --> Great Meadows
WV (2) --> Charles Town, Mountaineer
WY (4) --> Wyoming Downs, Sweetwater (Rock Island), Central Wyoming Fair (Casper), Energy Downs (Gillette)
WA (2) --> Emerald Downs, Sun Downs

Canada (7) --> Woodbine, Fort Erie, Assinaboia Downs, Marquis Downs, Century Downs, Northlands Park, Hastings
Puerto Rico (1) --> Camarero Race Track

Don't know if I missed any that meet the criteria I listed, but if not, that makes the total 104 tracks. Those shown in red have not been added to my visit list yet, and by visit I mean attending a live race card there.

Add Horsemen's Park, Lincoln Race Course, Hastings and South Sioux City (formerly Atokad) to Nebraska. They all run at least a day or two.

Add Great Meadow to Virginia. They run some flat races in addition to steeplechase.

Hi,

I missed HPO and Great Meadows (who I didn't realize ran some flat races.). I'll update my original posting. Hastings is already on the list. I chose not to add Lincoln and Atokad to the list because they ran 4 and 3 races respectively (all at 1 furlong) for the express purpose of keeping their simulcast licenses valid.

For the record I also did not include tracks (like Ajax Downs) who exclusively offer QH races, as the person starting the thread specifically mentioned Thoroughbreds.

Thanks for the updates!

I mentioned them as in the same category as Lincoln and Atokad. They are known as Fairplay Park. BTW are you still with PTC, and if so, I hope things are going well!

Although best known for QH, Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico runs Thoroughbred races on a regular basis,usually a mixed card.

I was going from memory and not a list. Don't know how I could have missed them, because they are on the yet-to-be-visited list. :blush:

Ruidoso clears runs enough TB races on their cards, so I've added them to the master list.

Thanks!
