Paco Lopez won a race at the Spa today. That makes him 1-40 ish.

I do not understand why a rider who usually won multiple races daily at Monmouth takes his book to Saratoga to "take a beating" ? I don't think he has had much success there in the past also.

Bet horses. Not jockeys. Less to blame.

His mounts at Saratoga have earned $221K this meet, and in 2016 all his mounts earned 9.6 million. Hardly think he is doing this for the money. Wish i had the chance to spend most of my summer there :)

Only one way to get the a break and get the big horses, gotta ride in the big leagues. It may not work out, but worth a shot, no? It isn't like he is hurting financially I'm sure.

For example look at Ricardo Santana Jr. He came here last summer and his mounts earned 1.2 million and he's at 436K already this meet. :headbanger:

That explanation makes sense. "he is taking his shot". But I'm sure it was a lot of fun having your picture taken in the winners circle 2 or 3 time a day at Monmouth. His success at Gulfstream's winter meet proves his skill. It is definitely tougher in New York though when you get "Ortized".

I agree with CJ. That and the purse differences are huge. He earns more from 1 win here than 3 at Monmouth. I wouldn't be surprised to see him ride in NY full time. A lot of guys started and Monmouth and went to NY to be successful. I think long term it will pay off for him, good aggressive jock.

He is only riding for the summer meet at Saratoga. He will be back for the short Monmouth at the Meadowlands meet as well as taking a few rides at Parx before heading down to GP in late November. He is also riding for a few outfits that ship to GP for the winter that didn't use him in the past. He will be fine once he hits a nice streak. Good to see him giving it a try.

I know the 7 was done the finale today, but you have to give at least a token effort at some point just for appearances sake. He basically eased the horse while just a few lengths off the lead.

I didn't understand the Spa move either at first.

But it looks like Monmouth is just horrible, plain and simple. Maybe he felt there was little to gain this summer by riding there.

Paco and agent must have felt that riding and winning even just a few Spa races might curry favor with trainers that aren't using him but might give him a shot if they run a stakes race or two out of town.

Just an opinion.

Add to that, the current race week at Monmouth. They have 14 more days before moving to the meadowlands for the 6 race per day turf extravaganza.

Saratoga has 24 race days left then back to Belmont. Who knows if Monmouth will go to a two day race week next summer. Long term, makes complete sense building relationships now.

If you don't believe that you can ride with the big boys, you never will.

Right now the question is what will Kulina and Drazin come up with as it seems no matter how many racing days they have at MP their guaranteed payments for running the track under the guise of the horseman will remain the same or increase, makes sense less work same pay, sign me up!:bang:

Yes, but he came to RIDE.
Paco, not so sure why is there.
Maybe his doctor sent him for the waters.

This assumes the "big boys" ride.
Grabbing and herding, no doubt.
Riding, not convinced at all.

I've seen more aggression on a bicycle built for two than most turf races at Belmont N.

Yeah...Just don't embarrass yourself by moving up too soon.

Guy made a jump. He wants to be great. Not many guys jump into a 'Toga meet and win any, much less many, races.

Ricardo made the jump last year. He wasn't good enough last year as well.

Amazing what connections and a few solid horses can do for a jockey.
