Trainer Louis Meittinis died Monday night in his Westbury, N.Y., home of an apparent heart attack. He was 61.
Meittinis, who was a successful Standardbred trainer before switching to Thoroughbreds in 1992, trained the winners of 98 races and the earners of $3.2 million. He bred two-time New York stakes winner Trial Prep.

Meittinis' survivors include his wife, Carol; sons Nick, a Maryland veterinarian, and James, a harness driver; and daughter Dina.

Viewing will be Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Oyster Bay Funeral Home, 261 South Street, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 11771. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:45 a.m. at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 93 Anstice St., Oyster Bay, with burial to follow at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, N.Y.

Born, Oct. 16, 1942 in New York, Mr. Meitinis was also born to the harness business of his father.

His best harness horse was Hard Hitter. The 1979 Three-Year-Old Pacing Colt of the Year, Hard Hitter earned $826,542 that year - at the time the most profitable single season of any harness horse. Later, Hard Hitter was syndicated for $5 million.

At age 50, Mr. Meittinis retired from harness racing and devoted his time to training Thoroughbreds. He won the 2002 New York Derby at Finger Lakes. Judy Soda, who has earned nearly $120,000, is entered in Thursday's $250,000 Statue of Liberty division of the New York Stallion Stakes for three-year-old fillies at Saratoga Race Course.
