Suspicions confirmed. A 60 Minutes segment tonight shows how "Silicon Valley is engineering your phone, apps and social media to get you hooked." The over-riding goal is to keep people using their product for as long as possible.

At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon, which I am, the younger folks in this country have the attention span of an hyperactive 5 year old, and the "smart" phone has a lot to do with it. One former high tech insider calls it a “race to the bottom of the brain stem.”

Man...I'm feeling pretty smart for sticking with my dumb Tracfone to help get me through the vicissitudes of life. :jump:

I have a flip phone and don't do social media. I am shocked how some people, even older ones can never put their phone down to the point of endangering themselves and others.

I have the iPhone 5s, it comes in handy to be able to check email, text, and read PA while at work. I like that if I have to wait at the auto repair shop or wherever I can amuse myself. However, I don't at the current time feel compelled to get an upgrade (and have a phone bill $40 more). And I do see people, usually young but not always, using there phones and blocking out the world. You should see these fools on busy Manhattan streets texting and oblivious to their surroundings.

I also see social media such as facebook tries to mold the user while creating a database on said user.

The phone has suddenly become such a necessity...that keeping it in our pocket is no longer feasible. We must hold it in our hand at all times.

You go shopping at the grocery store, and idiots keep running into you because they can't lift their heads up from their phones.

IMHO, this is laughable.

Like this is a new thing.

Companies have been trying to build stuff that people want so much that they will stand in line for hours to get it.

Not just phones.

Krispy Kreme donuts.

McDonald's.

How about Coca Cola back in the day when the "coca" part meant the real deal?

How about cigarettes?

For once it's nice to be different. I don't text. I don't Facebook. My cellphone cannot connect to the Internet.

In fact, I like not being connected mobilely (probably not a word).

Screw GPS too. Getting lost in this day an age is an adventure for crying out loud.

Yesterday's clean hit is today's concussion.

Scott Stevens was a throwback to the 6 team NHL defensemen of the 50's and 60's. I am a Flyers fan and my nickname for him was Osama Bin Stevens. I still hold him responsible for the "clean hit" that essentially ended Eric Lindros' career. He was an unrepentant head hunter, a dirty player whose real intent was to injure puck carriers without incurring penalty minutes.

Yeah, Tracfone.
I make calls, period. I seldom take them.
I am amazed at how many people sit starring into their phones all day long, ignoring reality in front of them.

It's an addiction. This is how the zombie apocalypse starts.
