The 2017 racing season is upon us!!!! Saturday night is opening night with 1st post at 8 PM eastern, 5 PM Pacific.

To me, the best kept secret, in USA racing, is EMERALD DOWNS!

REDUCED TAKEOUT of 15% on Pick 5's and the Pick 7 (not a jackpot :headbanger:)

Near average field size of 8 per race in the opening night card.

An awesome, caring CEO, fans in the stands, MANY of them, a hard riding colony (very few-let's rate till they can't breathe rides), very few "Supertrainers", formful racing, fantastic post times, an energetic TV crew/ANNOUNCER and subtle track biases.

The countdown is now at 73 hours and 35 minutes :headbanger::headbanger:

Probably, my favorite JOCKEY in America right now. Man gives an intelligent, honest HARD ride race in, race out :ThmbUp::ThmbUp:

I could be wrong but Emerald seems to have the BEST female jockey colony in the USA year in, year out.

I think we talked about him a bit before. Early in his career, he was here in Vancouver, at Hastings.

Very light hands, the reins just sit there, he always looked very comfortable. Seemed to have a good clock in his head - could rate on the lead horses well, but would occasionally take an off the pace horse up to the lead if he sensed the pace was slow (especially in route races)

Was not afraid to whip left handed around the far turn, which is a key to success here. (Most jocks hit right handed around the far turn here because the turn is irregularly shaped, and they think there horse will get out - unfortunately, hitting right handed almost causes the horses to "stutter step" and they lose momentum)

IMHO - Would rank as one of the top 2 or 3 young jockeys to start (or nearly start) their career at Hastings over the past couple of decades.

Go get em EMD....

This is part of what I love about the board - you make me pumped up to check out Emerald Downs; Nitro makes me pumped up to check out Hong Kong racing. It's fun to be around fellow fans of what is now a niche sport. Best of luck at EMD :)

And EmD did not even mention that EmD now has a casino. An Indian casino no less. I wonder if this change will have a good impact on the racing, or whether it will result in the same ambivalence about racing that we have seen with other racinos.

Yeah, I wasn't too excited about the casino but it's only on the 5th floor. 21 tables or something like that.

Something tells me the love for horse racing and passion you see there won't be impacted by it.

Look me up if you do. I live in Auburn near Lake Tapps. I promise you that you would not recognize Puyallup or Auburn. The Hoonan's are extremely nice people. It has been a struggle for Debbie with her many injuries.

I sure hope not. I have heard too many stories about people's backs turned to the track while races are running, track conditions becoming an afterthought, etc. The nice thing about that casino is that it is smoke free!

I doubt that I will go out tonight as it will be too crowded because of the post races fireworks show, but I will probably go to the races tomorrow. Good luck with your bets!

Kubinova at 1-5 in finale, not sure how she missed the board.Probably needed the race and poor record at the track w/ only 10% of lifetime earnings at EMD. I only handicapped into the results but this one looked overbet. Like a WIN ALL except :10: but the race had been run, so fwiw.

On my annual trip to the Prineville, OR (Crooked River Roundup) races in mid-July which run from a Wednesday thru Saturday, I usually extend my trip by one day to drive up to EmD on Sunday. The track is typically very-well attended, so arriving even 30-45 minutes prior to the 1st post means parking far away and about a 15-20 minute walk to the track entrance. The past few years they had food trucks on Sunday, which were a nice addition.

About a year or two ago I heard word that EmD was considering some support to help some of the class C tracks in the Blue Mountain area resume racing, because it would help racing in the state of Washington. Not sure if there is still any interest, but I would love to go back if racing were to ever resume.

For those who have never heard of the Blue Mountain racing circuit, it consisted of Sun Downs (still runs 6 days a year), and tracks Walla Walla, Waitsburg, and Dayton, which have been dormant now for about 5-6 years. :(

I enjoyed being able to tour the plant with you from the drive in, to the lot, through the gate, into the doors, and onto the elevator. I threaten to go to EMD every year and never seem to get there so getting a sense of the sights and sounds is a good consolation.

+1 for Frugal's Jason, but it isn't that expensive inside the track. Still, I would rather have Frugal's!

You're right it's really not. But Frugal's is the best! Plus I had a traumatic experience with the "dollar dog" back in 1999
