Which book? Do you mean Trotpicks: Modern Harness Handicapping?

I've never come up with a logical mathematical conclusion as for a minimum, but generally speaking I don't like to bet exactas that are under 4-1 odds. That's not to say that an exacta payoff of $8 isn't good in certain circumstances, such as a five horse field where there are two standouts. A good bettor is always going to look for an edge. But in a field of 8 horses or more, once you go below $10, it's just hard to justify a bet.
