So the sale topper was a $650k Malibu Moon bought by a partnership of Wayne Hughes and West Point. Both owners are pretty prominent in west coast racing.

The horse is being sent to NY.

Least anyone still think CA racing isn't entering a death spiral. When you create a sale for the sole purpose of funneling horse flesh into racing barns and the best part of that flesh leaves for greener pastures you've got a huge problem.

More than 60 horses have been withdrawn from the sale, which has sale with 134 hips (from an article yesterday)

Here's the kicker. The catalogue was decent. You had four Animal Kingdoms and three Orbs which are brand new. You had three by The Factor and two by Gemologist who are VERY popular right now. You even had three Pioneers of the Nile!

Then on top of it had big money sires like Smart Strike, Giants Causeway and Malibu Moon. Plus one of the last chances to buy Unusual Heat and Lucky Pulpit at auction.

And there was ZERO market.

Kind of scary.

The Leadership of Ca. Racing knows where this is going and is doing NOTHING to reverse course. Shame is that there are still a lot of people who believe they are working to make things better. They are not.

2yo sales are notorious for scratches. You'll find a high percentage at the Fasig and OBS sales this year too. California has the added disadvantage of being way out in CA and if you race in the East you get to tack on another $5k plane fare to their price.
