Hudman must be in this one's pedigree somewhere.

I imagine this horse has won several non-sanctioned races in his day.

He worked-out twice at SA in 2013, his first official workouts (when he was merely 5)

Then not again until TuP in April of 2016 (by then obviously pointing for this race).

But then, something clicked... as despite his having had just 5 career drills prior to November of 2016, he managed 4 in a month (before needing a 25-day break) and then working 4 times in 27 days again (and then needing another 3-week rest).

He showed up in the afternoon sporting just a single morning drill since February 4.

Obviously in peak condition.

I do get the gist of your post (btw, very good) but, aren't there "rules" or requirements by the Stewards before a horse races especially a FTS?

Well, yes, there are rules and requirements that way...

Not only do they vary from state to state, but they aren't very demanding in the first place.

(typically it might be "must have (at least) one official workout within 30 days, and two official workouts in 60 days" )

Some places might require a 3rd 'recent' workout, and others might demand that at least one of said workouts is a certain distance or greater.

Amusingly, Bullseye isn't the only winner from this week who was on the SA worktab on March 12, 2013. Royal FJ also worked 4 furlongs on that same day.

(the latter now having twice as many fast-track-dirt wins as does newcomer Bullseye ) (after 94 career starts)

Had to look at the chart.

Dumped rider in the gate and had to be reloaded, defying yet another 'rule of thumb'.

Seemed to come from a mare that drops winners and one who

Established track record at Golden Gate Fields for 2 furlongs in 0:21.59

Yeah, but what was the runup.

And he is 9 to 5! Smart early money, off at 4-1

That was a scary incident in the gate and probably a big reason he went up to 4-1 late. I thought for sure he would be scratched. Trainer was probably begging that he not be!

Last year at Canterbury, Bernell Rhone ran a 7 year old that won it's first start in a turf route.

I think it was 7-1. He was out of War Chant.

Years ago the number of bush tracks and fair meets in the West was enormous. Even Utah used to run bush races - no betting of course. That was the days of the wild west.

The horse was so fast, he was 8 before they could catch him in the field.
