Many Venezuelans are eating two or fewer meals a day and nearly three quarters have seen their weight plummet during the country's recent economic and political crises, according to new research into the country's living standards.

Venezuela's economic crash has been an continuing problem. The oil price crash in 2014 and resulting policies by President Nicolas Maduro have led to mass shortages of food and other products, and dizzying levels of inflation. The IMF predicts inflation will reach 1,642 percent by the end of 2017.

Data from the latest Venezuela Living Conditions Survey (ENCOVI 2016) found around 81 percent of Venezuelan households are now living in income poverty, up from 75.6 percent in 2015.

I heard Sean Penn tried to offer a new food product there that didn't do so well. They were called After Dinner Mints.

Those are the same people that claim they cannot afford to eat right because it is too expensive. I don't think I have ever seen someone swipe an EBT card that was buying milk, chicken, fish or fresh produce. They usually look like they are in charge of buying the junk food for a party.

We had a family come into my spouses business tonight. They came in right before closing. It’s a buffet restaurant. The family consisted of a husband and wife and two kids. Hispanic/Latin.

There was a 20 something man with them. A cousin. The husband gave an extensive tour of our food offerings to the cousin. They then sat down and had dinner. I was approached by the husband when he saw me lock the doors. He just wanted to know if they had to leave right away. Of course they didn’t have to leave. We began to talk and he introduced me to the cousin who had flown in from Venezuela yesterday. We talked for a half hour while the restaurant was being shut down. The cousin just wanted to see a buffet style restaurant and they were driving by and he “just had to come in"

The cousin was going back to Venezuela in a few days. He told me if he doesn’t, his parents will starve. He is on a list to buy some groceries next week. He cannot miss his turn in line. He will be buying mostly breads and flour with a slight possibility there might be some chicken available if they are very lucky.

He explained that to buy meats you must go into the country and find a farmer or black market farm stand and pay outrageous prices.

He receives 100 dollars a month from his family members here in the US. This allows his family to live much better than most. Minimum wage is about 10 dollars a month now. So his hundred bucks is well received.

We had a very short conversation about how all the wildlife has been eaten and many were forced to eat their pets. He was obviously ashamed of those facts. He told me his cousin and family fled a little over 2 years ago and were able to enter the US because his cousins mother ( the husband of the family mentioned above) is an American. He stated they paid for him to fly to Houston to visit and attempt to find a way to come to the US legally.

He was afraid to speak about the government and told me so. This was a very interesting conversation...........I asked him what I should tell my friends about our discussion. He said "believe all the bad things about Venezuela, and do not believe anything the government says, we are dying” he then told me about people dying in the hospitals because they cannot get basic supplies such as antibiotics and oxygen. He said the government rules with “threats and rifles” he doesn’t see a change anytime soon.

That's very sad. We need to hear stories like this as a reality check. Some like to constantly fuss about their life in America, when our poverty is living like a king to so many in the world.

I'm pretty clueless about them, but I was checking out at the grocery a few days ago when a 7-yo put 2 gallons of 1% milk up on the conveyer. His grandma was with him. She said they had to make this stop just for the milk as the grocery they just left didn't have any. I asked if the boy didn't like regular milk. She said she was using her daughter's card, and that they don't allow whole milk but instead just lower fat milk. So there are restrictions on some cards at least (though I'd have no issue with whole milk being allowed).

Then his family comes here, the Democrats brain wash them, saying Republicans hate minorities and only look out for the rich, and then they vote Democrat and exacerbate the situation in Venezuela here in the USA. 70% of Hispanics vote Democrat, even after they see how it ruined their own country. Brilliant!

That must be the WIC (Women,Infants and Children)card.There are very specific things that can be purchased and clients have to separate those items from the rest of their groceries.Find it odd about the whole milk;I was under the impression pediatricians recommend that children only drink whole milk until age 3 ,for brain and nerve development, then they can switch to a lower fat content.

I think the rules must vary from state to state. I can't believe whole milk is not allowed in your state yet in California where I moved from EBT could be used on non diet soda, candy bars and potato chips.
