He was outstanding in the title role of one of my favorite movies "The Elephant Man"
I tried to link the train station scene from the film (I..am ..not..an...animal,..I am ..a...man!) but YouTube has taken them all down.

Loved him in Rob Roy, a somewhat overlooked GEM of a movie. In fact, his bastard son, Archie, might be my favorite movie character.
He introduced us to the "Alien" in one of the most startling scenes I can remember...

One of those rare actors whose work had an authenticity few possess. "The Climb" remains a personal favorite. R.I.P.

Its funny that I know I've seen him in many movies, but the only one that sticks out in my mind is Accidental Tourist.
He is referenced in a funny bit in Modern Family in one of the Philsosophies.

That's William Hurt, not John. No relation.

The best Caligula ever. If anyone did not know he was Caligula on I Claudius on PBS back in the 70's or early eighties

He was perfect as Winston Smith in 1984. Many people might not remember, but he did a great job playing Caligula in the excellent mini-series I, Claudius.
