The coverage provided is woefully inadequate. How are they marketing themselves when they don't cover the year's largest event. How do you convince an organization that should be promoting themselves to get it together and do so?

It's interesting that John O'Neil, who won the NHC two years ago, also uses Black Magic. However, he qualified for this year's NHC and didn't cash, yet the winner Ray Arsenault uses the same program and wins it all. It just goes to show you that no matter what data, program or tools you use, it's how you interpret the data in that specific time period....

You have to figure that the winner wasn't the only one using that software. I've seen videos for demos of that software. Looks too complicated for me. :D

It's a complicated game. The real skill in horseplay is seeing past all the noise and focusing in on the 1 or 2 things that REALLY matter TODAY. Hard to do. Even harder to do consistently.

Made it to the NHC for the first time this year, concentrating on the "feeders" to get in a qualifying round during a hot week. Didn't even enter a tournament for five or six years prior, but the feeders make for an economical approach, and you can wait for the time of year when your favorite tracks are running.

Great time. Crowded, with over 660 entries and about 550 players or so, but only got shut out once when I tried to get a last-second change in and the horse had jumped from 5-1 to 9-1 (ran second). I did okay Friday, but ran out of gas on Saturday trying to keep up - plus I came down with a nasty bug that knocked me sideways all this week. Finished in the upper 3rd in the consolation tournament, but no dough. If you qualify though, it's a pretty sweet deal - four free nights at TI, $1000 travel, a $100 chip for a horse bet, a hat, some vodka and a few other trinkets. Met some great guys. One gent at my table cashed in the consolation tourney Sunday morning, and another cashed on a 100-1 bet on Arsenault to win the tournament.

I believe there were two "cappers" each day, and I know Arsenault caught one at 50-1 on Saturday to begin his surge. Played along with the final table races on Sunday afternoon and cashed a couple races to get back some losses from the first two days.

I'll be trying to get again this year. You just need to get qualified, and then hope a "cluster" of nicely priced horses run for you during the tourney....

I was out there for the second year in a row, but not to play rather to cover it. Always a good time, and might try to qualify one year. I think the NTRA does a good job, food was decent, and it is always fun to be in a whole room full of horse racing people. Lots of characters there :D

I always wondered what they would give you, if you're someone like me, who already lives in Vegas, and does not need to travel to the event.

It's super hard for me to even qualify for this tournament because the contest sites that run all the qualifiers don't allow Nevada residents to deposit money in an account to pay for the tournaments. We're stuck playing the free ones where you're up against 2000+ contestants vying for 3 or 4 NHC seats.

Although last year was my only my second year trying to qualify for the nhc ( and I fell short, I have only myself to blame, decided to not take a crack at it from June until after breeders cup ), but I was close to qualifying on points.

My biggest mistake last year was Forget trying to win outright against the 2000 people in each free contest , just try to place as high as you can as often as you can. For those of you unaware top 10% get tour points in each contest. A nice guy I met at the derby contest at treasure island known as the Dentist to the inner circle of players, figured out with me it would probably take around 10,000 tour points to qualify. Turns out he hit it right on the head.

For you Nevada guys and gals I think the Treasure Island has several qualifying tournaments a year + there are 3 or 4 a year at Surfside at DelMar + several a year at Santa Anita and Del Mar. And there's always cousins and friends ...

Wow, that's fantastic! Congratulations! Tough beat on the $1.50. Two years ago I was something like $1.50 out of the top 50 (the difference between cashing and having a chance for more and -0-). Made me want to bet a show bet this year just to get the $1.50 just in case I needed it :)

To qualify for the NHC, you also have to be a NTRA "tour" member - an annual fee of $50 (there are also $75 and $100 memberships). In the overall scheme of things, the $50 is a small part of the overall cost, and makes you eligible for tour prizes paid out to the top 20 finishers at the end of the year. There's additional prizes for 1st and 2nd half finishes.

The real benefit of the tour, IMHO, is that the top 150 finishers qualify for a seat at the NHC if they have not qualified in a previous tournament. One of my buddies got in this year that way - never finished high enough to qualify, but a few top 10s got him in.

Check out NTRA.com for details - and enter tourneys out on DRF.com, horsetourneys.com or some of the other sites that offer feeders and tourneys.
