Jim Quinn and Tom Brohamer are teaching their 6 week Handicapping class at Santa Anita starting Saturday, February 23.

If you have any friends that are interested in learning how to handicap that live in the Southern California area, I highly recommend this class. Jim and Tom lecture for about 2 hours before the races each Saturday, then spend the live card at Santa Anita demonstrating the techniques that they lectured on in the morning. They deliberately avoid making picks: they are teaching how to handicap.
When I took the class, the topics included:
evaluating early speed
how to calculate and use speed figures (and when to NOT use them!)
class and form evaluation
Turf handicapping
Betting strategies
Evaluating younger horses and lightly-raced horses.

I took this class for several years at DelMar after I had been playing the races for 4 years, and it made a big difference. Based on my own experiences and style, I have modified much of what I was taught, but Jim and Tom give you an excellent foundation upon which to build.
Space is limited; don't wait until the last minute. To enroll, call Bonne (maybe Bonnie?) in the Santa Anita marketing department @ 626/574-6395 between 10am - 4pm Pacific Time on Monday or Thursday to Sunday.
(And, no, Frank does not have me on a commission plan!)
