Going on a trip to NYC next week and want to hit up Aqueduct on Saturday. I'll be staying in Times Square for the weekend so I have a bit of a trek. Can anybody from the city offer any tips on getting there, or just go with the trusty iPhone? Excited for my first trip to the big A!

i think the A Train will take you from Manhattan right to Aqueduct

I never went that way but it is just a subway ride, I believe the E or A (although check iphone) which is on the 8th Ave line. Just walked through Times Square Thursday and Friday going home from a work training event, it is very touristy this time of year. Virgils BBQ is very good for food as is Carmine's. Ignore the Disney characters who want to take pictures with you.

I haven't been to AQU in years, I know it is a racino now.

Take the A Train DOWNTOWN/BROOKLYN from the stop at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. There are two A Trains, one goes to Lefferts Blvd and the other Far Rockaway. You want the Far Rockaway train as the Lefferts train does NOT go to Aqueduct. They come about every fifteen minutes and it will take you 45 to 50 minutes from Times Square. I recommend getting on the back of the train ( the last two cars are fine ) as the exit closest to Aqueduct is by the back of the train. When you get off the train at Aqueduct/Conduit Avenue, follow the people, as they are either going to the track or the casino.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, as I make that commute every racing day. It's an extremely easy trip.

Incredibly thorough.
You could've easily responded with a plain ol' "take the A train Bud"
Just a kind gesture IMO.

I've always been partial to John's Pizzeria (No Slices) in Times Square (260 W. 44th St.) if you are thinking NY pizza. Late night I like a slice of Junior's Cheesecake with an egg cream (1515 Broadway).

Good a time as any to relay this historical artifact.

Back in the day, there was a man, a hulking man, in his late 40's at least, probably a little 'slow', who spoke with a halting speech pattern.

This man would carry, under his arm, 50 or more copies of The Morning Telegraph. He would go up and down the aisles of the A train, hawking the paper to the hundreds of horseplayers who made the daily trek .

"Morn-ing, Tele-Graph, Morn-ing, Tele-Graph'. Advertising his wares. Though none of us needed much prodding, if we didn't already have our paper.

And after each sale, $1.00 at the time, he'd cry "Who Else!, Who Else!"

The things that stick in your mind.

I think driving to Aqueduct from anywhere can be brutal. I was on a vacation and drove there from eastern upstate New York just to see the track in June.
I thought Southern California rush our traffic was bad. After checking out the track I drove through Long Island and took a ferry to Connecticut. That 50 mile trip took 3 1/2 hours. I don't see how anyone can stand to live there.

Aqueduct is just off the Belt Pkwy, which crawls during rush hour and sometimes even on weekends. It's awful. And then when you get to the end of it having used a few gallons of gas sitting in traffic, you're rewarded with the $16 Verrazano Bridge Toll.

But you get nice squeeze guys willing to wipe your window or else even when you don't need it. Actually I don't see them anymore.

As inner found out even Long Island is population saturated. It never gets too rural at all.

I am planning a visit this break hopefully. Coming from Jersey it is a haul. Hour and a half with little traffic, $15 for the Outerbridge then $16 for the Verazzano on the way back. Rush hour traffic is nightmare. Beats Turf Paradise though! Def a Big M visit tossed in there as well.

I don't understand what point you are making. How can you compare driving to a large city in the middle of the desert to New York City with 10 times the population density?

The classic Take The A Train by Duke Ellington was based on taking the A train from St. Albans Queens to Manhattan. Many of the greatest jazz artists lived in St. Albans and had to go to Manhattan to play their gigs. Besides Duke, some of the jazz greats who lived there include Count Basie, Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, to name a few.

Turf is about an hour and forty minutes from here. My point is, I would rather pay the tolls and deal with the rush hour traffic going to aqueduct for their racing compared to what is run here. IMO aqueduct is worth the trip this time of year compared to what else is racing, whether that be coming from the city or jersey.

Ok, you were comparing racing quality. I thought you were comparing the drive and the neighborhoods. I did meet a girl once who said she enjoyed traffic jams because she liked people watching. I thought I had seen bad traffic when there were a couple wrecks on the 405 in Los Angeles as Hollywood Park let out into the LAX traffic mess. That was nothing compared to New York City traffic.

Do yourself a favor Polo, and stay in Times Square. Don't bother heading to Aqueduct for obvious reasons that don't need to be repeated over and over here on this forum.

That's the best tip you'll get here on this post.

And if you do go, I guarantee, your first trek to the Big A will be your last. (And that's if you survive from your train ride back into the city if you venture back after dark)

Hang out in the village or downtown, stream in some races at a cafe on Bleecker or Carmine Sts. and plan to make your trek to either Saratoga or Monmouth Park in the summer.

Driving?
If you want to get there for first post, you'll have to time your departure just right. There is a bit of a lull between 10 am and noon. Then lunch time the streets are pretty packed.
Manhattan has been made auto unfriendly with the current and past admins insistence on creating bike lanes on main thoroughfares and turning thru streets into pedestrian malls.
Anyway. Your most direct route off Manhattan in the 59th st ( Queensboro) bridge which will put you on Queens Blvd. You can take that out to the Grand Central Pky to the Van Wyck Expy ( I 678) south to the Linden Blvd ( exit 3) then right to Rockaway Blvd for about 1/4 mile. The track is on the left.
If I were going, I'd take the subway and leave the car right where it is. Traffic is going to be infuriating.

he has to take the Number 6 train from Grand Central Terminal downtown to Chambers St then walk to the Fulton St Station and catch the A out to Queens. There is a spur that goes to Aqueduct.

This is an absurd post. It's clear from your comments that you have ZERO clue as to what you are talking about. I, and many people I know, have made that train trip at all hours of the day and night, and never had a problem. Just the fact, frankly, that you merely list some touristy streets in the city only furthers your obvious ignorance.

Hopefully Polo will give your post the attention it deserves....none.

As I watched this video, I know that I've stood (many times a billion times) in so many of those places shown on the video.

I don't know why that giant casino next door to the track doesn't have rooms.
Since it doesn't and I got a whiff of the worse traffic I ever saw in my life when I checked out the track this past June, I doubt I will ever go. That is a shame as I am only 317 miles away by the shortest route. If that casino had rooms I would just come and go around 2am and avoid traffic.

Did some research and noticed a Courtyard and a Sheraton 2.4 miles away I think I could tolerate that drive in traffic. Do those hotels have ample parking? Probably would come from Penn National to get two tracks knocked out. What would be the route with the least traffic from Penn? I have no problem driving an extra 50 or so miles to avoid traffic. Since Aqueduct is my favorite track to bet I feel I really need to get there for live racing, but that damn traffic.

78 east. Pulaski skyway to the Lincoln tunnel...is my route back home..but if you don't mind an extra x amount of miles then 78 east to 95 north to route 46 east. Take lower level (GW bridge) , Harlem River drive south to the Triboro (now RFK bridge) take the bridge , turns into grand central parkway. Take that to the van wycke expressway. Take exit 3. Go through light (past Rockaway blvd). Make right at next block (avoid 14 lights :). Go 1 mile. Make right at stop sign (Rockaway blvd). 5 lights down make left into racino.

This route avoids NYC traffic (Lincoln tunnel and Manhattan traffic).

Also by taking 46 east instead of 95 to the GW bridge you save a ton of time as most trucks stay on 95 (which has major inclines).

I have a question about parking. Someone was complaining in another thread that parking prices were raised at AQU. I went for the first time this year on Sunday. I parked in the casino lot for free and it's not a bad walk at all. I've had longer walks on the simulcast side on some Saturdays in the past. Are they charging for the parking spots right next to the simulcast section? If they are, I don't see the point of paying unless you have a physical issue with walking.

I consider myself borderline claustrophobic, my girlfriend says I am full blown claustrophobic. If in a confined space I want enough room to outstretch my arms. Too many people get in an elevator, I will get out and take the stairs.
How many people in the train car would be my issue, not what they looked like. If they pack them in like sardines, screw that!

There's a decent amount of lodging in the area because JFK is nearby. If you don't mind a slightly longer drive there is a decent holiday inn on sunrise highway in Rockville Center (or is it Lynbrook?)

Looks like 10.6 miles away in Lynbrook from my only experience in that traffic that could take an hour to drive that far. What hours do you have to enter that area to have minimum traffic? I am an insomniac who can half ass function on very little sleep and I hate traffic. Is coming in to town Midnight to 5am work?

Looks like 10.6 miles away in Lynbrook from my only experience in that traffic that could take an hour to drive that far. What hours do you have to enter that area to have minimum traffic? I am an insomniac who can half ass function on very little sleep and I hate traffic. Is coming in to town Midnight to 5am work?I used to go to Aqueduct all the time on weekdays from Long Island...hardly any traffic at all if you go after rush hour...so if you head out to Aqueduct around 11am you should be fine.

Coming back home to LI, I never really ran into crazy traffic...certainly not an hour's worth...yeah, if you leave the Big A at 5pm you're going to hit some nice traffic...so you either have to leave before 5 or stay later...

I agree with this, unfortunately the last race and the height of rush hour converge. It is still usually not that bad, maybe on a Friday it will be worse but I would think you should make it in 30-45 minutes even in rush hour. Once you get off the belt parkway it's not too far.

That one day in June may have been particularly bad, maybe not I don't live on Long Island anymore. I have gotten into some crazy bad traffic jams going back to visit- real soul numbing encounters. So I do feel your pain but there have also been some times it wasn't too bad.

[QUOTE=the little guy]Taking a lot of A train rides to Aqueduct these days?

I take the A train to Aqueduct every racing day, and some others. It's good enough for filth like me....but not royalty like yourself.

really:

I take the A train 4 days a week and work in NY

Care to compare crime stats on the Racino bus with the
Beautiful '" safe" A train??

perhaps there are police officers on this board to weigh in on this insane
statment of yours.

Maybe it is just an urban legend. Ever since I was a kid television shows have made the NYC subway out to be one of the most dangerous places in the USA.

I was 10 years old the first time I visited NYC for the breeders Cup in 2001. Just me and dad made the trip to see grandpas horse in the Sprint. Saturday after the races we take the train from Belmont to the city, by the end of the night dad somehow lands us in Jamaica after riding the subway too long I would assume. We were going to have to walk to another station when we got off and an older couple advised my dad to call a cab. He didn't drink, just a country bumpkin I suppose :D

Didn't seem that hard to navigate on my own this time around, but having an iPhone prolly doesn't hurt

I am 55, been hooked on this game since my step-dad took me to the quarter horse races when I was 14. My first bet was $2 on a $57 winner. My step-dad snatched $5 from my hand and said the winner buys the drinks. He also told me since I looked older I could place my own damn bets and his too. Oddly I don't think I out did that $57 win price till almost a dozen years later. Didn't cash another ticket the rest of the night. I ended up about $25 ahead. I kept asking my step-dad daily when we were going back. My mom would say "Jack, look what you caused, all he wants to do is go to the track, he isn't a normal teenage boy any more."

Moral of the story, most of us that love this sport start young, glad to have you here.
