You're point is well taken as Jose struck horse at least 23 times, by my count. However, when viewing the head-on, a story develops between stable-mate riders. Javier, on the outside after the break, crosses over sharply, with Jose having to check back, or else running into his stable-mate's hindquarters. From then on, it's all out war by Jose to get past Javier, thus the inexcusable number of whip strikes. Looks like someone, or both jocks, will get their asses chewed out, once they get back to the jocks room....More to come, I'm sure.

Are owners and trainers responsible for what a jockey does in the heat of the moment?

Don't you think the stewards are going to or have already talked to the jockey?

Did David Applebee Jr. come out of retirement? I recall him being married to a Rice or engaged some years back.

Check out poor Dad'z Laugh in the 9th at AQU today.

In Jose Ortiz defense, it's hard to say where the whip is landing. Is it on the saddle and not any part of the horse itself, or what?

Are you sure you aren't from California, Gary? Your all-caps, olympic leap to conclusions-- calling for heads to roll--name calling--assuming the worst of everyone sounds very familiar to this Cali boy.

After reading your rant---I'm guessing that horse came back, blood running down it's hindquarters, thick open welts, a look of terror in it's eyes.

That 3x rule originated in California, where they call a whip a "crop" to appease the Animal Rights Groups of which there are many. Before that I hear it started in Europe.

It's been proven that whip gets the horse's attention.
Look at any horse after a race....even one you "assume" was viciously whipped--you won't see a mark anywhere on that horse. I've looked for myself.

These are huge, strong animals--some very stubborn. I'm absolutely NOT for hurting any animals....but there's always been some aspects of this game that were distateful---if you're a little squeamish perhaps cage fighting is more to your liking.

Apologies if I came off a little harsh Gary...I hear this kind of thing in Cali all the time from the PETA front. If you're a fisherman you'll get a kick out of this:
I saw a bumper stick that---Hand to God--it said:

FISHING IS MURDER

I'm a racist murderer now

Point #1 caps in my world can /should exress anger.

Regardless if whipping is a wakeup call to a 40k maiden claimer
the stewatrds are supposedly the sheriffs to protect the thoroughbreds,
wagering public and lastly the jockeys who have everything to gain or
lose by diregarding the the rules of the game .
Those jockeys who choose to break the rules are generally given days
and in fact cost owners serious purse money.

My point is this incident will go unnoticed unless someone from
this boards rants vis CAPS or no caps

BtW, I am an owner and breeder for many years and have been dq'd
in questionable calls by the stewards.

Reversing the order of finish would prove a point that stewards
exist at NYRA, and , in fact, they are actually doing their
job as stated above

Finally, I was born in Brooklyn, NY and have been involved in
the NY-NJ-PA circt for over 40 years.

The only value to CA racing ,inmho ,is SA and DMR for scenery.

As an owner, first time I get fined for what a jockey does on one of my horses, I will get out of the game the next day. Most owners don't have much say in the jock either.
