Congrats, Vic.....With the money you're taking down at these tourneys, are you sure that gig at Oaklawn pays enough?...

Hello,
I don't post often, but I just got off the phone with Vic, whom I know as a fellow tournament player, California racetrack denizen, and friend.
He wanted me to let you know that he does keep an eye out on the PA forum and has been taking note of your kind and encouraging comments. He greatly appreciates them.
Side note: From the perspective of an avid handicapper and tourney player, trust me, Vic is one of the good guys. And he gives back to the sport in a million ways. I know he doesn't remember this, but I first met him at Santa Anita about 10 years ago when I was taking my Sports Communication students over to the backstretch to learn about horse racing, which never seemed to show up in the sports majors' curriculum. I said hello to Vic, and he said immediately if there was anything he could do to help out the students, bring them up to the booth, whatever it might be ... just ask.
Congratulations Vic. You are definitely an amazing handicapper and tourney player par excellence!

I would also like to add to this.
Last year while I was out at the NHC for the program here, I reached out to Vic about having a chance to talk to him in Vegas. He was gracious enough to speak to me in the middle of the tournament as well as reached out to me here at the program and left his number for any follow ups I had.
He does do alot of good that goes unnoticed.
Congrats and thanks Vic.

That is a nice message from Vic. He does seem like a good guy. I had a similar experience when I met him in person 11 years ago at Del Mar. He also sounds like a great handicapper. Did he happen to tell you why he couldn't come to PA, a site where he has been posting for years, to personally thank us for our well wishes? It is nice of you to convey the message, but it strikes me odd since he just posted on this site very recently.

Awesome place for sure Ralph. I know I'm not well known here but I'm known on the tourney circuit.
I am not here to advertise anything at all but you can look me up by my real name, and I am one of the few women in the US to own a company related to handicapping or tourneys. My tourney name is Sophia online, but my real name is Barbara Bowley. I didn't write this, but this is me:
"She is the only woman to have won a $100,000 contest and a $50,000 contest, is regularly atop the DerbyWars leaderboard, and has won major prizes in all the top online sites, including HorseTourneys, HPQualify, and DRFQualify."
So that's me, and that's how I know Vic.
Big invite to all PA members to hang out with me at Del Mar anytime you're there. Again I don't post much, but have learned so much about handicapping from all of you all for years now, and feel I owe you much, and I would love to hang.
I'll be at the Aqueduct tourney on the 19th and 20th if any of you are planning to go. Would be great to meet. Packing for the flight out tomorrow AM from San Diego as we speak.

I know he has high praise for the site, as do I; there is no repository of handicapping information of this caliber in existence. And I know Vic has posted fairly recently but as of late has kept an interest in reading rather than posting. I think he is stepping out of the limelight here for the moment, and don't feel It's appropriate for me to say any more simply because I am not his spokesperson, just a friend; but I was asked to convey his deep appreciation for you. No controversy with him. It's all good.

Just a note about great tourny players. Charlie Davis who I know posts here sometimes finished 2nd in the BC Challenge. He is a great guy and he has really stepped up his game to consistently finish on or near the top in some of the biggest tournaments. Sophia probably knows him....I am so happy for him.

Welcome to Pace Advantage, Sophia!!
You are in a league of your own and this is a fine, fine thing in an endeavor usually taken, almost solely, by men. You, and, I believe, Judy Wagner? You two are the only female major contest winners I can recall. If there are others, they escape my knowledge, which is no astonishing feat, I promise. Anyway, congratulations for them, too.
On good days, these gentlemen are a teachable bunch, on excellent days, they do a great amount of the teaching.
Take care, and again, welcome. :)

HAHA. Most of us guys could refute that endlessly.
Handicapping is such a guy's thing that the few gals that do post here, and play in general, adds a dimension that's almost indescribable. The old cliche of the gals that pick colors and names is so old and worn out, but still prevalent. My wife can read a form with the best of them, and I wouldn't hesitate to play a strong recommendation of her's with serious money at any time.

Good for her!! This makes for a long marriage, ULT. I'm happy for you.
I have a friend from NJ, now in Florida, whose father spent much of his life at Monmouth. She loves betting, just as her late dad, yet, she's never wanted to learn to handicap. On Breeders' Cup, she's been up early in the day as much as 1K and would ask me to keep her money so her husband, who was with us, wouldn't see her winnings. She bet colors, birthdays, house numbers, you name it. .... Without fail, she'd say to me, "just give me $100 for this race". By day's end, she'd lost all of it back. .... So many times, I'd tell her, "you'll lose your money doing this. Your luck won't last, this isn't the way to play horses." She knew it, and proved it, time and again.

My mother has gone to the races since she was a kid (she saw Seabiscuit run in person) and started teaching me to handicap when I was 5. And she learned from her mother. And she's a very decent handicapper- cashed a big ticket on Take Charge Brandi in the BC a couple of years ago, for instance.
Bill Clinton's mother was apparently a very good handicapper and a fixture at Oaklawn.
It's definitely not completely a man's game. Just that a lot of girls don't get socialized into it.

My wife, with 3 older brothers and a father that all played the game seriously, introduced her to it at a very young age. She can remember going to Longacres when she was first allowed in after her 10th birthday. Her father always challenged her, and he ultimately was the driving force in challenging me to master handicapping, as much as it can be mastered anyhow.

Dilane, here's one more, then I'll stop. My housekeeper is 70 years of age. She's from Chicago. When she was a little girl, preschool, she'd go with her grandma to get the DRF at a nearby store when Arlington was running. (Lord, how long has the print edition been in existence?) They didn't go to the races much, grandma, instead, would go home, handicap the races, make her notes and picks, and then take the trolley to her bookie to make her bets. .... Grandma always had money. ;) I've so enjoyed learning about Grandma's love of racing. You're correct, this is not a social introduction. For women, it's a solitary thing.
