It's funny. This was right around the lie that we were guessing they would post as the Friday attendance. The better question is whether or not total attendance for the two days will ACTUALLY be higher than the made up number for the first day.

Likely close.

Threads like this make me believe our game will die from the inside. If one can't be happy this weekend, go play checkers.

The crowd count looks legitimate. It's well over 50k today.

I am not going to argue with TLG about this, however. I know he is right that crowd counts sometimes get padded at big races (such as at Churchill); however, I believe the announced attendance.

It didn't seem that crowded yesterday, there was some room. Today is a different story. I think 45k was probably an exaggeration but then again I didn't count everyone.

Why is it that, every time a track announces a high attendance figure, people automatically dismiss it as fake? It is impossible for a track to have a lot of people on a big day?

72,811 people were at Santa Anita today. Attendance record for a BC at Santa Anita.

I'm still in the traffic jam in the parking lot.

is the count based on ticket sales or turnstile? Friday we arrived early and walked right in the gate. No one was even at gate to look at our tickets. Saturday we entered at the clubhouse entrance and had to go through a security check and then had our tickets scanned. From my observation Friday was busy. Saturday was very busy, but not Derby busy.

Yeah, umm, while we're exposing falsehoods, what's definitely farfetched is the $125k stud fee for Pioneerofthenile (whatever the spelling is). He was waaaayyyy too SLOW for such an exorbitant fee:lol:. Like anyone is really buying it.

Make that 72,812 - I was able to sneak in.

I have a lot of experience with big crowds, but take this for what it is worth. I'd guess 35k-40k on Friday 55-60k on Saturday.

Take this for what it's worth. I've been going to Santa Anita all my life. Saturday was the biggest post-race traffic jam that I have seen since March 3, 1985, when they had 85,000.

Big crowds don't look quite as big anymore because fewer people sit in the grandstand. But the apron was full and the downstairs betting areas were very crowded, as was the paddock and paddock room.

That would assume the 85,000 was true also.

That 85,000 was the biggest crowd I have ever seen at a racetrack. You had to go down 15 minutes before the race to bet (they didn't have the self service back then). There were lines at the restroom. The upper level of the grandstand was wall to wall humanity. And my mother, who attended Ohlaverry's Santa Anita Handicap (also 85,000), said it was exactly the same.

What has happened, as I said, is a lot more people are buried down inside the grandstand than used to be the case. But the parking lot traffic jam told the tale. I am not vouching for every single one of the 72,000 announced, but it was a HUGE crowd, one that Santa Anita has not seen for decades.

Yep, definitely more than 2 years ago. The place was packed.
