Mile the option for Limato at Breeders' Cup

By Jon Lees 10:43AM 24 OCT 2016
LIMATO (http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=855659) will run in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita after his connections on Monday ruled out the option of a tilt at the Turf Sprint.

After discussing both races with trainer Henry Candy, owner Paul Jacobs said the July Cup and Prix de la Foret winner would only be entered in the Mile at today's pre-entry deadline.

It means Limato would meet defending champion Tepin, winner of the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. He finished fourth in the Lockinge Stakes this year on his only start at 1m.

Jacobs said: "We talked about it on Friday and the more research I've done and the more advice I have received has been in the direction of the Mile.

"We decided we would make the one entry. We'd rather have the certainty now than spending the next week with everything that has to be done at the back of our minds saying 'Should we be going for that?'.

"Obviously the Mile will be a more competitive race as you would expect but given everything that's involved we thought quite frankly we would go for broke on that score."

Limato was 3-1 favourite with British bookmakers for the Turf Sprint. He is a top-priced 4-1 second favourite behind Tepin for the Mile.

Found given Classic option at Breeders' Cup

ARC heroine Found (http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=865655#topHorseTabs=horse_r ace_record&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form) is under consideration for a tilt at the Breeders' Cup Classic, according to trainer Aidan O'Brien.

The Galileo filly scored the second of her three Group 1 victories in the Breeders' Cup Turf last year but connections have raised the possibility of a mouth-watering clash with California Chrome in the Classic.

Speaking at Leopardstown on Sunday, O'Brien said: "We've decided to put Found in the Breeders' Cup Classic and she will be entered for the race in the morning. Whether or not she runs in the Classic hasn't been decided.

"She's also in the Breeders' Cup Turf, which she won last year, and we'll wait a bit longer before deciding which race she will go for and what other horses we'll be taking to Santa Anita."

Following the news, Betfred inserted Found into their Breeders' Cup Classic market at 12-1. California Chrome heads the betting at even-money, ahead of Arrogate (5-2) and Frosted (8-1).

Highland Reel (http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=851076#topHorseTabs=horse_r ace_record&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form), the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner and Arc runner-up, is likely to represent Ballydoyle in the Breeders' Cup Turf.

The coveted Classic

Ballydoyle has long since coveted the Breeders' Cup Classic, which over the years has been a magnet for several of Coolmore's best-known names, from Giant's Causeway and Galileo to So You Think and Gleneagles.

Success in North America's senior race has been elusive, however, and even ended in tragedy at a muddy Monmouth Park in 2007 when the gallant George Washington was put down owing to injuries sustained in the race.

Aidan O'Brien nearly struck gold with his very first Classic runner, the 'Iron Horse' Giant's Causeway in 2000. On the dirt at Churchill Downs, the six-time Group 1 winner went down by a neck after a memorable stretch battle with tough-as-teak Tiznow as he won the first of his back-to-back successes.
