In the face of public backlash, NBC has cancelled plans for a prospective new sitcom that had been under development titled "Mail-Order Family", about an American single father who marries a Filipino woman whom he meets through correspondence so his two daughters can have a stepmother.

The show's American female creator (who was two years old when her birth mother died) based it on her own experience of being subsequently raised by a Filipino stepmother.

Protesters alleged that the show was perpetuating harmful stereotypes of Asian-Americans (particularly women), and making light of the problem of sex-trafficking.

Even though the planned show has now been dropped, protesters are still unhappy that it had been given the green light by multiple organizational levels at NBC, and came so close to getting on the air.

My Filipino wife of thirty years and I (who met through correspondence) are still rolling on the floor laughing about the story.

Incidentally (for your viewing pleasure), here is a link to our firstborn, Randall (Dartmouth '09 (Phi Beta Kappa) and Harvard Law School '12) recently representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (beginning at the 16:36 mark of the video) in the hearing of an appeal before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts of a man's conviction on a charge of illegal weapons possession.
