This ailment can be attributed to poor diet high in sugary feeds ( molassed or sweet feed). Horses which consume high amounts of sweeter grasses such as rye or feed in in turnout paddocks where there is clover. Also working a horse excessively on harder surfaces is a cause.
Horses that have suffered from colic can contract laminitis.

The more we get away from horses' natural grass diet based on hay, oats and water the more problems we will have.
The modern thoroughbred is a locomotive running on toothpicks and the hard pounding on hard dirt surfaces doesn't help either.

I know the owner doesn't owe us a thing... But I always find it odd that certain folks wait a while to releases the news of a horses passing...

This fellow passed on July 26th, yet the article comes out on October 1st.

No harm meant, just an observation.

The connections "tweeted" the news soon after it happened.

The Blood-Horse only came up with an article because someone in a comments section of another story stated as much and wondered why it wasn't covered by the magazine. The next day, the article came out.

Yes. Materiality finished 6th in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, just behind Danzig Moon. About six weeks later, Danzig Moon had a catastrophic breakdown -- a compound fracture of his right hind leg -- on the backstretch at Woodbine and was euthanized on the track.
