"Instead, the dead heaps signaled the killer was less mysterious, but no less devastating. The pattern matched acute pesticide poisoning. By one estimate, at a single apiary — Flowertown Bee Farm and Supply, in Summerville — 46 hives died on the spot, totaling about 2.5 million bees."

One of the realities of human nature is that the less a threat of a disease is to us, the more over reaction there will be.

SARS, Ebola, now Zika.

The benefit of bees to agriculture is thousands of times more important than than the threat of zika. But nobody sees that because bees are common (well not the African KILLER BEES :) ) and Zika is unknown.

I agree.

Plus, spraying seems unlikely to solve the problem permanently as long as people are traveling, getting bit and infected, and then traveling home where they get bit again.

This is bad as the honey bee population has long been in decline, has it not? This was a poor decision on the part of the state of South Carolina, or this particular county, though they did attempt to notify beekeepers of the aerial spraying.

Less bees, less ability to pollinate. Yep, that works well for all vegetables, fruit trees (our food supply) all trees, and flowers. :(

If the bee keepers would have done what they were supposed to then none of this would have happened. The percentage killed is such a minute fraction of the overall population that it is irrelevant. Blame the bee keepers, not the county that did it.

If the bees vanish then scientists will come up with another way to pollinate all the plants. Nothing to worry about.

I think you meant if the bees all vanish the left will come up with another rallying call.

For all the plant life in this world, yeah, good luck with that.

A stupid question perhaps, but shouldn't it be easy to produce a lot more bees?

I was worried about something like this happening when I saw all that spraying.
