Race One:

Steeplechase. The Grade I, 150k New York Turf Writers Cup Handicap.
:3: Bob Le Beau catches my attention. This Irish-bred was the winner of the AP Smith Grade I Memorial three weeks ago. The most competent Jack Doyle reprises the ride for trainer Elizabeth Voss. Voss does very well with horses entered in graded stakes. This gelding won this same race, last year. In fact, he’s won three Grade I stakes in the past year. This 9 year-old should be coming off the tailgate and, if Jack Doyle times his ride perfectly, he should put this gelding’s nose under the wire, first. Others: :4: , :6: , :2:

Race Two:

:3: Risener is my longshot play to beat the obvious, little-value, “chalk”. This A.P. Indy-bred’s two previous starts were MSWs, one at “The Spa” (he finished 8th) and one at Belmont (he finished 5th). But, one thing is for sure, despite the two non-distinguished race results, this chestnut gelding is dropping like a lead balloon off the top of The Empire State Building. Will he find this caliber of company more to his liking? Only time will tell. There is front speed. Dylan Davis, who reprises the ride for trainer Richard Schosberg, must get this gelding into contention – early! A recent-decent 4-panel morning-work signals readiness. Others: :7: . :6: . :4:

Race Three:

:5: Mazmania is my pick in this wide-open turf sprint. This 2 year-old chestnut filly does have a decent turf pedigree, e.g., Langfuhr (Danzig) and a mare, Ometz, who produced two winners from two starters. This filly’s most recent morning work was good. Manny Franco is in the irons for trainer Gary Sciacca. Sciacca will need to “get off the schneid” to record his first “Spa” win. Others: :7: , :8: , :9:

Race Four:

:4: My Won Love was second in this company at this distance at Belmont over a month ago. This Utopia-bred chestnut mare has been a consistent sort who’s graced the tote-board on 11 out of 19 lifetime tries. This mare was claimed in her last from Naipal Chatterpaul and now finds herself in the Steve Kleasaris barn. Klesaris does well with first after a claim. Manny Franco is in the irons. Others: :1: , :7: , :5:

Race Five:

The David Jacobson trainee, :5: Winter Games, is my selection in this claiming main-track sprint. This Diane Balsamo-owned gelding won his last routing at Belmont back in mid-June. Trainer Jacobson does well with horses that have been on the shelf. The turn-back to 6 and ½ panels shouldn’t pose a problem; yet it should be noted that this gelding is undeniably a router. Jockey Joe Bravo must get this gelding into the game, early. Others: :7: , :6: , :3:

Race Six:

:5: Bright Side Up is my upset try in this claiming turf route on The Inner. This 3 year-old chestnut filly was leading at the top of the stretch in a higher-caliber claimer only to fade in the final furlong and finish 5th. The rider change to Jose Ortiz is significant. Look for Ortiz to guide this filly to the top, ration out her speed, and play catch me if you can. A well-rated ride could very well lead to a trip to the winner’s circle. The capable Dave Duggan trains this daughter of Exchange Rate. Others: :4: , :7: , :8:

Race Seven:

:7: Excluded is my longshot pick in this turf route on the Mellon. This A.P. Indy-bred gelding is stretching out; he should enjoy the added distance of ground. Trainer John Toscano, Jr. is winless at the meet, yet he does well with horses that go sprint-sprint-route. Manny Franco is in the stirrups. Others: :9: , :2: , :3:

Race Eight:

:5: Flash Trading is my pick in this 9-panels allowance route. This Broken Vow-bred chestnut gelding won his last at this distance in allowance company at “The Spa”. This Unbridled-bred has been either first or second in his last three. Javier Castellano is in the irons for trainer Albert Stall, Jr. Stall has conditioned three winners in nine tries at Saratoga. Others: :1: , :4: , :3:

Race Nine:

:8: Pricedtoperfection is my pick in the 100k non-graded Riskaverse Stakes. This filly was last seen finishing fourth in the Grade I Belmont Oaks on July 9. She now catches a field she should handle. It’s the “Irad and Chad” Show. That dynamic duo has combined to win their share of races at Saratoga this summer. A recent, sharp 4-panel work signals readiness. Others: :7: , :2: , :4:

Race Ten:

:7: Dream On is my longshot upset-pick in this turf sprint. Yes, this 4 year-old filly does move up in class after breaking her maiden on a sloppy track. This Lemon Drop Kid’s offspring has not exactly distinguished herself on the grass (oh for 3), but there is decent turf pedigree, esp. on the top side. The filly’s conditioner, Carlos Martin, is having an outstanding “Spa” meet. The filly jockey, “El Dominicano,” the nonplussed Joel Rosario, has been winning his share of races. This filly’s work-tab leading up to today’s grass sprint has been very good. Others: :8: , :4: , :5:

Winner took the late action - no clues on the LS Placer

I suspect that the track conditions are having an big impact on the results.
So take the selections with a grain of salt.
