A guy goes to the window and says "Exacta 5 w 1,2,6 top and bottom." What is the guy betting? What would the bet cost? Or would he just get a blank stare?

I recall reading that phrase somewhere.

The guy is betting exacta 5-1, 5-2, 5-6 & exacta 1-5, 2-5, & 6-5.

Total minimum cost is $6 or $12.

I recall reading that phrase somewhere. It means you are playing the :5: on the top and the bottom of the exacta with the :1::2::6:. Your winning combos would be:

5-1
5-2
5-6
1-5
2-5
6-5

A total of 6 possible winning combinations would cost $6 for a $1 ticket.

Another way to phrase this wager is Exact Key Box 5 with 1,2,6.

Another way to say it is,
Exacta part_wheel, 5 with 1, 2, 6.
Exacta part_wheel, 1, 2, 6 with 5.

In 36 years of playing ON track, 90% of the time, I have NEVER heard that.

What state/country was that in?

It is a common way to make that bet. Especially in Florida (or any state that has or has had) greyhound racing. Also fairly common at harness tracks, including the "exacta part wheel" preamble. That prevents confusion with quiniela part-wheels.

Basically he's Keying the 5 with 3 others in the Exacta. "Top & Bottom" simply means the 5 for the Win position and the Place position. It's been a very common expression and used for many years. Newer players may not of heard it so much these days because going to the track is not as common as it used to be. There can be no confusion with a Quinella simply because he used the "Exacta" betting term.

You could also refer to that as an exacta key box.

The cost would depend upon the denomination of wager.

If $1, it would be $6.

As for any pari-mutuel station handler in the US understanding what you are wagering? Good luck. Most can't even key in an Exacta Box of 2 horses, much less a "top and bottom" 'key' wager with a key horse and 3 others.

I'd be fairly positive if you said top and bottom you'd get that blank stare.

Now, as far as what you are saying, yes, it is common among horse wagerers, but they then know how to make or speak the wager.

Similar to comments I make like: "Hammering the deuce, and then wheeling him back with the :3::4::6: if he don't win, and then spreading those pigs in the P3 with that single of the :1: in the 4th and then the :9::10:."

Is that something I could go to the window with? No.

That's actually a pretty good wagering format to follow. But is the deuce also a pig in the pick 3?

So $20 to win :2:
$1 Exacta :3: :4: :6: / :2:
$1 P3 :2: :3: :4: :6: / :1: / :9: :10:

Is that your wager?

Well it is not like I got $100 bills flowing from my seams you know...was trying to keep it in perspective...what would you suggest as a better ratio?
