Wow! Congrats to Vic on this. In my opinion, the last two years, Oaklawn Park has been the best racing in all of America. Deep fields, classy runners and not dominated by cheaters. Really great racing.

Vic's voice will add to the appeal. I think he's a great fit for that track.

Isn't Nancy Ury @OP?

Nancy Ury-Holthus is the television face of Oaklawn.

She is fantastic!!

This will be a very easy transition for both Nancy and I. We've been friends since we first met in 1990 at the Woodlands in Kansas City Kansas.

Over the years we've worked together in many different capacities.

We've done TV work together at Hawthorne and most recently on TVG where she really blossomed into a truly excellent, live on air, broadcaster.

We were also fellow California Stewards. Nancy helped me greatly with prep work prior to receiving my accreditation as a steward.

One of the things I'm most looking forward to is again working with Nancy at Oaklawn. :jump:

I've never called fractional times.

They are always posted on the TV screen.

I think I can report the impact of pace without reciting the numbers.

Some hate that. Some like it.

I have to follow my heart and do what I think is best to paint the most accurate picture.

Not likely to change now with 40k under my belt.

Unfortunately sir, TVG does not always believe fractional times are important to the viewer, as is evident through their frequent non-posting of them in their feed. Nevertheless, your calls are superb without them, and will certainly be bringing more of my money to Oaklawn this winter. Congrats!

I think it's a fine policy. One of my favorite and most insane friends would get absolutely furious at announcers for reporting a half-mile time (for example) of 44.96 as 'forty-four and four'. "Someone tell this ignorant son of a bitch that if he had a nose a centimeter shorter it would be a forty-five half!" Granted he was prone to getting furious about all sorts of things that most people never even noticed, but that one always made me howl. Which tended to make him furious.

The word picture is all that matters.

My two cents on announcers and fractions, worth a penny at most...

I'm fine with giving fractions, but they aren't necessary. What I don't like is when announcers try to tell you what fractions mean. They usually don't really know and are making nothing but semi-educated guesses.

I personally prefer to just be told the action on the track, not interpretations from announcers that border on in race handicapping. Just my opinion.

This depends. I mean, if we're going 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita and there's a horse out all alone and the half is 49 and change, there's nothing wrong with an announcer pointing out the favorable scenario. (Or, conversely, if there are three horses out there dueling and going 45 flat.)

OTOH, most pace dynamics aren't that blatant.

Sure, definitely agree with that. And on turf with various rail settings and run ups you really, really have to do your homework to know.

So Vic, I have a question about living arrangements for an announcer like you. Nothing but weird random curiousity really. I believe you live in the Bay Area or Northern Cal. Oaklawn Park is on the other side of the country and is a 4-month meet. Do you maintain a separate residence in Hot Springs, or do you just rent week-to-week in an economy hotel or something like that. Feel free to decline the question if it is too weird or personal. Inquiring minds - okay, just my inquiring mind - want to know.

No worries King. Understandable question.

My home is Marin County Ca. My wife Tina is the director of marketing for a SF based realty company. That's home.

3 1/2 months is too long on the psyche for a hotel.

For me at this meeting I'll seek a turn key, corporate housing, type situation.

Each meeting is different as are of course other announcer's preferences.

I assume your stripes days are over, probably its time anyway, it gets tougher and tougher getting up and down the court as one ages. If so believe me youll miss it.

Not to be too nosy but you planning on this being your last race calling job?

The only way my stripes days will be over is if they drag me kicking and screaming off the court.

Did two great games today at San Quentin prison.

Will admit I'm paying for that right now. Their courts are outdoors and concrete.

So basically we've gone from congratulating Vic to having a discussion about men's underwear within the last 24 hours.

No worries. I was starting to think I was a Big Shot anyway.

Great thread turn even for PA.

Thanks again guys! :)

Yes and you can blame me some for asking an OT question and blame whodoyoulike a lot for the underwear specifically and any thing else you would like to pile on generally.

Vic, here is another question for you. Did you see Manson?

As I said you should be writing to the Hanes underwear company that they wasted spending all that advertising money on a very successful ad campaign because you said so.

100% incoherent post, written to the wrong person.....No big deal, it's par for you.

Manson is not at San Quentin.

He's been at Corcoran for many years.

The only "infamous" inmate I know for sure incarcerated at San Quentin is Scott Peterson.

Even that's more than I care to know.

We are told not to engage in any conversations with the inmates other than simple courtesies.

I probably now know maybe 50 guys. From fellow refs, score keepers, coaches and the players. All 50 I know only by nickname.

Do they know your nickname is "Goof on the roof"? Or must they address you as "Sir Goof"?

I have a friend who worked as an orderly cleaning Manson's cell block. They became friendly, shot the breeze concerning my friend's grandmother, who had raised him, and my friend began sharing his snack stash-candy bars etc-with Manson.

Manson's response was to demand other "food" favors, or he would "send a few people to visit a certain old lady in WV."

My friend is nobody to trifle with. So one day he "rebuked" Manson-severely- with a broom handle to the face . No mystique or real menace, just a delusional, self- aggrandizing idiot. Who never threatened my friend again.

More like a psychotic, sociopath murderer (okay, he did not technically kill anyone, but still). The rebuke sounds reasonable to me.

2M, remember when Garth Brooks sang his monumental hit, signature lyrics,

.... So, I got friends in low places?

It sounds like you've got a good one! One who takes nothing off of a parasitic, predatory, ruthless, now insignificant, withering psychopath who should have been executed decades ago. ... I hope that grandmother is still alive and well today.

So did you give out any technicals?
