I haven't been following every circuit religiously this summer but I've seen some pretty obvious biases at a few tracks ....it seems as those the rail is as gold as can be at Ellis and Emerald and dead as can be at Mountaineer...anyone one agree or disagree?? Also woodbine seems like the inside paths are definitely where u want to be...

Problem is, it goes away like magic

After five days of successfully eliminating front runners at Presque Isle last week from Sunday (July 31) through Thursday (August 4th) things have taken a turnaround here to at least being fair to both closers and speed horses. There was a speed horse in the third race today (Sunday) out of the 12 hole, who last week you wouldn't have been able to find with a search warrant. Today in that race the winner went wire-to-wire and the 12 ran third.

IMO this was the result of a day long parade of tractors simply driving over the racing surface from at least 12Noon when I arrived until 4:45pm. There was no harrowing ever, nor was their any harrowing done between races. What they created was a packed down track that enabled the speed horses a condition that they did not enjoy last week.

In the second race (or maybe third) there was a catastrophic break down when a closer tried to come up the rail inside the sixteenth pole. It was then that they harrowed only the section of the track where the horse ambulance and the track crew euthanized the horse and hauled him away.

I'm not saying that the packed track condition led to the demise of this horse, but I am saying that the racing surface that they ran on today was totally unlike the racing surface they ran on last week.

Not being sarcastic, how many people were at Presque Isle (when you attended).

I heard some nice things about the view and the apron. Haven't made it there yet.

Just curious. And thanks for the on site reporting. Enjoy hearing these important tidbits.

Presque Isle never ceases to amaze me with their large on-track crowd. The spacious upstairs dining room completely sells out most nights, and a large family style crowd gathers out on the apron. Last night they sold grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and had a line about 15 deep all night. There is also a Bar-be-que stand that does a brisk business. The casino buffet is reasonably priced and open to the public, with plenty of seating overlooking the track.

There is no grandstand per-se. You either sit in the dining room (which is a perfect simulcast venue during the day) or mingle with the patio/apron crowd down by the rail.
I suspect the per capita wagering from these folks isn't very large, but there are a lot of folks there that are having a good time.

To the topic of the track bias. Presque last week and Presque this week is a good example of how you can run the same horse race on two different weeks and due to a true track bias get entirely different results.

Things appear to have returned to "normal" here at Presque Isle on Monday. The tractors were pulling harrows in the pre-race hours today, and the track played quite fair, with several up-close types prevailing.

My nine day stay here is completed, so I will be heading back down I-71 to Belterra Park for the remainder of the summer. Presque is a very enjoyable place to come stay for a few days. Clean, spacious dining room that can serve as your racebook, great food and friendly servers.
