Making a living exclusively by betting on horses is certainly doable...unless the player indulges in a lifestyle which demands frequent meals.

Like you've said many times, when the bills are paid from work and the horse bankroll is totally seperate and untied to "living" life, one can wager a whole let better/bettor (pun intended  ).

It's a whole lot different when you have no income but horse racing.

I've never tried but I could imagine.

It's nearly impossible for a single player to keep his sanity long enough to make a good living playing the races.

Apparently some syndicates do well, but I'm just guessing. There might be many fails among them as well.

The story suggests all or nearly all the folks you think of as pro's have DAY JOBS, or are retired with pensions.

Sure if you take 200 guys all playing full time and going for p6 scores, one or more will make some coin in any given year. But the vast majority will make little or lose.

If 98% of ballplayers lost money, how many pro players would there be?

Gus stated "The truth and nothing but the truth".

My reply- "So help us God".

Were you hoping for something stronger and wilder?....Best I can do, for now.

Aren't there about 50 meanings of beating the game?

I know of about 10 guys on here who are at certain levels.

Myself I made it through a few winters of betting horses to live comfortably. Does that mean making a living?

I can't do it. I've got Bugs Bunny numbers right now with wins but it is not making a living. I am pleased I can pay a bill or two with it which is self defeating.

Is making a living paying bills?

Is making a living paying bills and living the life?

Is making a living paying bills and living the life and saving money?

Is making a living paying bills and living the life and saving money and becoming rich?

Interesting question. I can't tell everyone around me to f**k off then make a living off racing. Let's hear from who can or have already done it. Thask is probably 1 of the few!

IT'S TOO MUCH WORK a lot of stress and study, mixed in with some insider track knowledge. These guys don't study a race for 30 minutes and lay down $500. I'd rather work a 9-5.

For guys like me, the best way to embark on a pro career is acquiring a large bankroll that means playing P5,P6,tri';s and using the all key when the need
arises. my opinion, you have to accept big loses

BTW: they seem to develop Health problems sooner too. sitting in a chair?

well I can say that have made some money playing the Jersey X, but it is a lot of work....and when I say a lot I mean a lot. I need a few days off in a row after a weekend on the X.

^^^^ is spot on. Supplemental income for me at best, and it took years to achieve that status. So many brilliant minds on this board and yet so few are in the black.

Several years ago, the company I worked for was purchased by another
company and they closed us down. I got a years pay as severance.
I knew that was the chance I had waited for to try it full-time.
I had been betting horses for more than 25 years at that point
and was ahead a decent amount.
The first year I lost $18,000.
The second year I made about $2,000.
The third and fourth years each I managed to make about half of what
I was making when I was working.
I took a job after the fourth year and have worked ever since.

I make a lot more money with the job---but I am 1/2 as happy as I was
when betting full-time. So, I am back to going on weekends and phone account during the week now.

I do want to go back to full-time at some point--but I honestly worry about
the future of this great game.

My 82 year old mother always says "so you want to become a Bum
again? And I say: NO, a HAPPY Bum--get it right.....

Good points and enjoyed the read. I bet full time from June 2000 to June 2005. First 3 years were good, then Texas racing went downhill. 2003 to 2005 I travelled to Louisiana to get good bets five months out of the year (and to Houston Four months a yr when they ran a five month meet), as an on track bettor. Felt like a gypsy.

My life was nothing like it was when I left "work". In the end I hated it and couldn't wait to get back to the grind. Had a choice to move to the Lafayette area and keep betting full time, or go back to "work"

At some point I'll try it again, but not traveling. I Have a plan, but I know it's not some romantic life style. Being married, this isn't something you just decide to do on the moment's notice.

I'll say this much to anyone considering betting full time... You will change. Not always for the better either. It's a tough row and it takes a toll even if you're successful at the Windows. There's just more to life than horses
