9th Mountaineer: 5.5F Clm5000N1Y ~ purse $6,300 (6/28/16)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3YO+UP, Non-winners of a race in 12 months
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to "The Bottom", the lowest time-restricted condition Mountaineer
writes. Horses dropping down to this level always a threat- there are 2 here.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Sarge's (4/1 ML)- Closer cuts back 620 yards,& has been picking
up checks this year. 9YO's last win June 2,2014 @Suffolk. Under Key?
2) Boy G. (5/1 ML)- Top earner of 2015 takes key class drop, eligible
by 6 days. Lagunes sticks w/Sarge's..Neg sign, or Sipp looking for $$?
3) Purincat (3/1 ML Fave)- N4L eligible, 7YO's last win? 4/30/14 on
Turf @TBay (& was Pvt.Purchase off win, not a good sign). Lone Speed?
4) Forward Thinking (8/1 ML)- Got sea legs off year & 1/2 layoff
in last,+++positive rider switch.Trainer 6:0/2/2 since 2013 2nd-off layoff.
5) Storm Love (9/2 ML)- Nailed by 3/5 fave 2 back when dropped
to this level, 6YO gets ++++positive switch back to"TheQ". Looks tough.
6) Quip Trip (8/1 ML)- N3L eligible, 6YO was half the price of Storm
in last off OK Ohio form, but did nada. ++positive rider switch noted.
7) Pecky's Boy (6/1 ML)- 8YO Router tried 2 sprints vs. tougher
in March, but drops & gets HUGE upgrade on Private Purchase. Must-Use.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE BOTTOM LINE: Honestly, this is one of the rare times in a
race at "The Bottom" where i wouldn't be surprised by anyone winning.
#3 & #5 should have a solid pace advantage on the field, & show the
best recent form, but at "The Bottom", that's not always a winning edge.
The droppers, #2 & #7 interest mightily; if Boy G. rediscovers his
stalking gear, he could fall into a great 2nd-flight trip. Pecky's Boy is
essentially a connections play, & was scratched out of much tougher
N3-12 month race last month to get easier. Prep for route? Why wait?
Longshots #4 & #6 get big rider switches & haven't been stuck at this
level for a long time, main knock on Sarge's.
I'll go three deep, 2-5-7 in Pick-5, & single #7 in Late Pick-4.
GOOD LUCK to ALL, & SEE you at Night School!

8th Mountaineer: 5.5F Clm5000N4L ~ purse $6,500 (6/28/16)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Non-winners of 4 races lifetime (WV-Bred races not considered in eligibility)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EARLY LOOK: Top 2 ML Faves are speedballs stepping up off flashy wins.
The lone West Virginia invader has also shown zip at times.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Antares (10/1 ML)- Penn National shipper Vet Scratch June 12th
here when 5YO would have caught much softer N1-12 month foes.
2) Vaulted Son (7/2 ML)- 6YO steps up from N3L wire job. inside
speed needs a Beyer Boost for win.
3) Papa's Paisley (12/1 ML)- Yet to threaten in 3 local spins, now
w/fourth different rider. Needs complete form reversal.
4) Thrown Your Way (8/1 ML)- Won't see lead w/#2+6 in field,
but has won from off-the-pace. 5YO yet to crack 50 Beyer on fast dirt.
5) Opash (10/1)- 4YO tried N2-6 month foes in last, these are softer.
Closer got OK Beyers in both wins,& may still have upside.
6) Shem Creek (4/5 ML Fave)- Goes for Three-Peat stretching
out half-furlong. Outside speed one to beat for Top connections.
7) My Lawyer George (15/1 ML)- Third off layoff for 6YO, Beyers
heading in the right direction, but doubt George can match speed early.
8) Cat's Best (12/1 ML)- Slow break off break, cuts back 110 yards.
Ability to stalk'n pounce off fast pace. Beat nothing Aug.12,2015 in N3L
win as 4YO, but looked good doing it. Longshot chance.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE BOTTOM LINE: Not surprisingly, odds-on ML Fave Shem Creek
looks tough, but has to carry speed another 110 yards. #1 Antares is a
little intriguing shipping in, but would have liked in N1-12 month spot.
My crazy longshot hopes would be closers: #5 Opash or #8 Cat's Best.
I'll single fave in Pick-5, Go three deep, 1-5-8 in Pick-4.
Good Luck to ALL, & see you at Night School!
