Anyone familiar with hotels near Charles Town? Looking to go near the end of July.. Would like to stay within 20 minutes of the track and preferrably in a murder free area..

Try the Knights Inn. You can see it from the track. Its also close to the freeway. Have a few beers and you won't here a thing.

I didn't know that West Virginia was known for its murder zones ?

I'd be willing to bet they have less murders than Delaware.

With all those shotguns down there??

And most of them being used AFTER a case of Keystone light?

um, just that it's affordable beer..

I remember in college, we used to buy cases of it for $7.99..

And that was only 8 years ago

Perhaps with that attitude, it is best if you don't come to West Virginia.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that. After a case of Keystone light they probably can’t shoot straight anyway. ;)

Anybody remember Dart Drug beer when it was $.99 a six pack? I’m STILL trying to get over some of those headaches. :D

While not as “down home” as it used to be, I’ve always felt more relaxed at CT than in Maryland. Maybe it’s just the difference between a bullring and the milers - or just me.

There’s a handful of hotels pretty close. Two of them, the Turf and the Townhouse are right at the entrance to the track parking lot. One is on one side of the street and one on the other. You could hit the track surface with a rock from either one of them. If those aren’t to your liking there are some newer places down the road towards Harper’s Ferry.

I hear they’re going to shut down the track to work on it (in August, I think) so if you’re looking to play any live races you might want to check and make sure they’ll be running. Of course I’m sure that simulcasting and the 3,500 one-armed bandits will be rolling full steam.

Change "hotels" to motels.

Ok, I guess I shoudl have mentioned that my wife is:

1) Used to nice hotels with irons, room service and a lobby
2) 5 months pregnant
3) Extremely irritable right now

So..... The hotel should be fairly nice I guess :-)

Well, in that case I’ll have to defer to someone who doesn’t sit in the cheap seats. :D

I think there’s a place on top of the hill down at Harper’s Ferry (about 10 miles from the track) that’s pretty ritzy but I’ve never been there. You’re obviously going to need better advice than I can give you. Sorry.

Don't need ritzy... Need Red Roof Inn or above..

Just nothing with 'Turf' in the name or that has an hourly rate :-)

There’s one on the right about halfway to Harper’s Ferry that looks pretty decent but I can’t remember the name.

Man, such sensitive people around here... I certainly didn't expect a per capita murder stat in this thread.. But I guess it's getting close to the election and people are testy..

Didn't that Stat show you something though?
Feel enlightened? .............. Personally I am not very fond of West By God Virginia and I have relatives running the ridges all over the damn place. Mostly 2nd and 3rd cousins that I don't even know. Now if you had spouted off about how many Dentist offices had gone broke in W.V. I would have been with you................:D

Enlightened to know Delaware's crime rate is higher than West Virginia?? HELL YEAH... I thought 4 years of college education was worth it, but not until now did I feel truely educated.

One note of caution. After you place a bet at Charles Town, you cannot change it or cancel it. I know from my own experience.

I am sure if you beat... I mean persuade the teller long enough, they will change it.

Well somebody is canceling them somewhere because I've noticed it on the tote board before.

I can't remember the name of the hotel, but it had a waterbed and a mirror on the ceiling. I simply stopped somewhere. It may have had Turf in the hotel name.

I think I remember it being within walking distance of some basement bar that had some kinda band and the tv was playing the summer olympics that hot July day in '96.

I also bought some Macanudos at an antique shop of all places.

Interesting weekend. Chalk won every race and I won none.

Enjoyed Sun. at Harper's Ferry, an awesome place.

Good luck!

What's there to do in Harper's Ferry?

Harper's Ferry is where two rivers (one being the Potomoc) come together and there are these great views of the cliffs, etc.

Nice historic village and lost of history. It's where they hung John Brown, if you are up on your cival war stuff.

Great place to spend an afternoon just milling around reading the racing form in the sunshine.

Those changes you see on the tote board must be from off track money, not from the track at Charles Town.

Not into Civil War stuff, but if they have shops like antique shops or clothing, my wife will love it. I will of course be gouging my eyes out at these types of places, but if she's happy.....

Well, over the past 4 months of her being pregnant, she has basically made it clear that I know nothing about anything.

I have learned to accept that, it's easier than arguing.

sq764,

FWIW, that place that I was trying to think of that’s about 4&1/2 miles out of CT heading towards Harper’s Ferry is a Quality Inn. Their # is 304-535-6302

Yes, I imagine so. It seldom happens but it always freaks me out when I notice it. The ones I’ve noticed have been win bets and they are way too big for the small pools. They show up early in the betting and then get canceled out.
