Sometime ago you asked about a racehorse being in part airborne while running a race and you wanted to know how long "in flight" would a racehorse be when it became airborne.
I was able to derive that formula, but mass of the racehorse is the critical
element since the normal g -force is constant.
The upshot is that "sprinters" will be airborne longer than "routers" and therefore that is a contribution to their increased velocity; less surface friction per unit of displacement.
I apologize for not responding in a more timely manner, but I experienced a sudden illness that sidelined me.

Hi Cratos, hope you are doing OK now.....if I remember regarding the in flight of a horse...I was trying to figure out roughly how far a horse flew as part of each stride. I guessed about 4 feet and since each complete stride cycle was I read was about 24 feet or so. So I was wondering if this distance ought to be discounted in surface friction calcs or if I was way off and the air distance/ time was negligible... Also since most of the other horses were flying also....but it is interesting that you noticed some difference involving sprinters versus routers....

The inside puff was thrown forward. The outside puff looks like thrown backwards. Were there 2 puffs created by Reds front or rear hooves? We know that he is covering some distance of ground while airborne.... So really 2 questions...how far is it between airborne positions, and what percentage of this distance is covered while airborne?

As usual you asked some very good questions, but I think to arrive at the percentage of a race that a horse is airborne would require a Design of Experiment analysis
The gravity velocity equation for objects upward is very good for showing the velocities for different values of time as the object (horse) is airborne, but it doesn't calculate the number of times during the race that the horse is airborne.

Plus, IIRC, the leads are (supposed to be) different on the turns to help them negotiate them. And of course some horses don't always change leads in the stretch or change leads more than once.

Where did you get this information from? How can a horse go from a minifly to RF to fly? You mean he is airborne, then puts the right front hoof down and then goes airborne again before any other hooves touch the ground?

About 2% of tbr have the following extended gallop contact sequence:
---fly---LH-RH---mini-fly---LF---mini-fly---RF---fly---
This is known as a triple air tbr. As you can see, it has both P2 and P3. The mini-fly open air suspension period is <.01s, hence it is impossible to directly observe with the naked eye.
If what you are saying is correct, then the puff of dirt on the inside that looks like it was thrown forward must have been done by Secretariat's left front hoof, which means that he was on his left lead when the photo was taken, right?
And if the above is correct then the distance covered by the airborne horse must be at least the length of that horse, as pictorially demonstrated by the photograph...

Traveling at 35 miles per hour, if a horse is airborne for 1\10th of a second he will travel about 5 feet.
If a person can visually notice all four feet off the ground while the horse is in motion then at least 1\10th of a second has elasped.

I dont disagree with your conclusions, but does not that 25% represent an average horse with a mass (including assigned weight) of about 548 kg in NA which is about 2.23 strides per second or stride time on average is about .45 seconds and air time would be about .11 seconds.

Not a bad guess; using Magistri Ludi"s methodology it calculates to 5.6 feet.

I wonder if these uncommon stride types lead to increased rates of breakdown?

I used a 51 feet/second average and the study you referenced is using a 55 feet/second average; this will change the horses air time from my suggested 5.6 feet to 6.0 feet.

The gravity velocity equation for objects upward/downward can be used to answer your question.
However you will have to make some assumptions about the horses mass and force.
