Is there any Preakness trends or angles like the derby?... Other than bet the favorite because they win over 50% of the Preakness' all time.

I went through the list of TC races over the weekend and determined that the best 3YO spring campaigner won the Preakness at a greater rate, more than the other two races.

Once that you get past the mid-1930s, when participation was still spotty, colts that won the KD and the Preakness, or won the Preakness and the Belmont, far outweighed the number of those that won the KD and the Belmont only. Lopsidedly so.

Bottom line, its smaller and less challenging field, while having a position in the calendar that hasn't sapped a Derby winner yet, really opens things up for the best colt.

Look for a horse who had trip trouble in the derby yet made a nice middle move, which you can get from the pace figures. Ride On Curlin (who finished 2nd in the Preakness), Oxbow, Lookin At Lucky and Curlin (among others) fit into this category.

The first or second favorite has won 21 of the last 29 events. Only two wire jobs in that time. Only two new shooters since 2000 and one was potential result of Barbaro breaking down. I'm gonna happily box the top two and sprinkle others in bottom two/three portions of tri/super. Not expecting big payoff but seems like a lower risk play than usual.
