Tom, I'm playing a DW tournament tonight so I posed your question to the support guy. He had never heard of that problem. However, he said that if you'll click on the green circle at the bottom of the page (that's how you access live support), that he would set up your account for you on the spot.

Revised OP and made things official...

We currently have 17 out of 46 entered into the $1,000 Derby Day contest (the 17 includes the 10 reserved spots from the qualifier, so 7 have already bought in), and 82 out of 200 entered into this Saturday's free qualifier. I'm in...are you?

Finally got around to taking a glance at the PPs when it occurred to me that April 30th is today and I've got to say that the qualifiers will have earned it. This is a group of races that ordinarily I'd probably love to play because I like a lot of the races and a lot of the horses and am sure that I'd find plays all day on basic odds criteria and exotic probables. But trying to play this one as a contest sequence is looking pretty daunting for a lot of the same reasons. I can't find one 'write-it-down-and-circle-it' must play in the lot.

Guess I will start polluting this thread with my pretend selections again.

Race 3:

As I alluded to in a post earlier, this was one of several races where I could like pretty much anyone in the field and find my plays based on the tote. But I figured this was a race I would just jump right in and take a stand early, assuming that my pick here would certainly be a good price off a 6-1 M/L, with the alternate to that one being 10-1 and even more likely to being a good price. Lo and behold, they have opened at 7-2 and 5-1, respectively.

I'm speaking of the two Donk entrants here and honestly when I looked early this morning I was really sort of counting on him electing to scratch one or the other and make it a little easier on me.

They've taken turns outrunning one another in the past and both are coming off breaks, but Aussie Prayer as a freshly minted four-year-old just seems like the one with a little more upside. Plus her works for this seem a little more geared for a good effort fresh. Love the :36 earlier in the week for this and hoping she'll show speed and get a good spot early.

:7: Aussie Prayer

Final answer.

Afternoon everyone, good luck.
went with :3: , just off how she looked in the paddock

johnhannibalsmith
04-30-2016, 02:55 PM
Race 4:

About the only thing stopping me from wanting to just put this pick up straight away was wanting to see if the money showed on a horse like the rail filly off the layoff or one of the first timers. It seems everyone is just intent to pound this bad gate filly that ends up with too much to do and meanwhile the other one I figured would be a better price than the morning line and dismissed as a fluke top last out has been up near 10-1.

It may be a flukey product of mud and bad foes, but barring the favorite breaking well for the first time and being right there or a firster having some gas, is anyone going to front or even press this one breaking from the outside? Beyond that, if she can make the lead is anyone going to dig down and pass her in a showing of raw grit and determination in the lane? If you can buy into the premise that you have to pass her to beat her, then doesn't she almost have to stop here for any of the known quantities to be more likely than not to get by her late? Do you think it possible that maybe it wasn't just the mud, but she was finally dead fit and put it together and can run hard to the wire again?

I don't know if I even buy it really, but I didn't like the alternative theories to justify a pick against the favorite here.

:9: True Charm

Final answer.

... doesn't she almost have to stop here...

I should have just stopped there...

Welp, I couldn't have used Allison in even a tournament, so shucks.

Race 5:

I'm really surprised that Gran the Man has opened so high - loitering up around 6-1 for most of the early betting and even now at 15 MTP still at 5-1.

I really wanted to make this one the right it down and draw a circle around it one of the day, but I didnt want to commit at a short price since there's a few that can run in here. 5-1 seems like an amazing price for what just looks to be a really sharp, really shrewd claim to freshen up win back on the jump up and then haul up here for the first level state-bred allowance with a monster purse for a $12.5 claim they've already won with.

As good as a few of the others are, not only do I like Gran the Man just for apparent merits, it just feels like the right move for the win. The end stage of a well-conceived idea and equally well-executed plan to get way out on the claim.

:2: Gran the Man

Final answer.

Edited because I just have too much fun rambling to myself and forget to actually keep score:

$3.80

johnhannibalsmith
04-30-2016, 04:04 PM
Gran the Man and 5-1 was a tease of a dream but 2-1 was actually better than what I expected.

Race 6:

There's no way I can play the heavy Pletcher favorite here anyway, but especially needing to catch some lightning. I had hoped the Zito horse on the outside would get no love with the Zito struggles and the horse's generally sluggish form. With that sharp work for the drop, maybe the buzz was about as seems like everyone was picking him and though 7-1 is still good - I was looking for a sign of life in the paddock and kind of liked the horse anyway, love the price, so hoping that the energy stays manageable and he's a fighter at 15-1.

:5: Policy Portfolio

Final answer.

Score: $3.80 + ($6.60 $4.40 $2.90 = $13.90) = $17.70

johnhannibalsmith
04-30-2016, 04:34 PM
I guess the lesson learned from that last race is a couple or few-fold - Don't talk yourself off of taking much stock in gems like Maggie's observation that my selection was sporting a running W. I'm still not sure it is enough info to dismiss, but in retrospect watching that one (thrice), she probably told you what you needed to know about a big money auction buy debuting for $50k.

The other lesson is that I wasn't off the mark either in dismissing the Pletcher and looking for something at a price that looked like it could run second and with luck (or bad luck to the 1) get the win. I didn't write the pays down but if memory serves me those that used either the runner-up or third place finisher made out better than those that used the winner. Still trying to figure this strategy thing out.

Race 7:

With all that said in the above paragraph, knowing I should find that alternative horse that can run second and with luck win at a price, I just can't get excited about someone like that when I genuinely think Rally Cry still has enough potential and upside to trash these and make something close to 2-1 look like a gift.

So,

:4: Rally Cry

Final answer.

Still at $17.70 after picking another one that stopped like a video game horse.

What are the chances we get a new track record at 7F on the souped up turf track in R8?

98%?

johnhannibalsmith
04-30-2016, 05:11 PM
Race 8:

Had a suspicion this one would be bet below the 12-1 M/L but I didn't figure it would open as low as 3-1 and still hang at 9-2. But there are just a whole lot of things that I like about this horse and was probably the closest thing to one I was locked into early on. Just figured that I'd be getting around 8-1 or something, maybe 6-1 at worst and get me some needed money at this point.

Anyway...

:3: A Lot

Edited to note Final answer and that we got $14.40 for the previous to make it $32.10.

A Lot yields $19.70 to sum us to $51.80 which means that to have any sort of shot of catching the leader, I probably need to hit the max or close to it with a $30 differential going into the last.

My top pick in this race was Conquest See Ya, but I rated quite a few so if I'm playing to win, that makes this real easy. We can't use Conquest See Ya at 4-1.

We can however use Jess I am at 16-1 or Henrik Rules at 14-1 to take our best shot at glory within the constraints, I think.

Jess I am isn't all that bad and seems to have a rough go of it at the start on a regular basis, so it isn't much of a reach for me to think he'll be a lot better on turf sprinting and if everyone tries to stay close on this fast turf, even with his usual trouble maybe he's the one that plays the steady wins the whatever card and just wears down the pace.

But, Henrik Rules had my attention the first time I looked at the race. His first race - on paper at least - looks great. His second looks bad. He then is away from the races, but appears to be training up a storm. If you can excuse the race that looks bad, which presumably was a result of whatever prompted the lengthy absence from the entry booth, the only real question is can he go dirt to turf because damn that was a nice debut on dirt. Showed speed and everything.

So it is. What the hell, lets close it out with

:8: Henrik Rules

Final answer.

Same for me, and I beat you by a dime. I wasn't really wanting to look at Churchills' card next Saturday, as I usually take a bath in the undercard. My plan was to make my entire bet on Nyquist to show. But since I won a seat in the qualifier, I might as well take a shot at beating Vic.

Charlie and I kept coming up with the same horses and I couldn't get by him as well.....congrats on 2nd

It was uncanny there for a bit how we were always on the same horse. Looks like you probably had a very successful day betting straight and vertical, and not so hot horizontal if you bet anything like me.

Congrats to the winner, truly impressive. Thanks for doing the contest PA, that was fun. I don't visit as much as I used to but it's always fun to hang out with the PA guys that were there when I first started.

LOL....there were a surprising number of people that paid for a "seat" but didn't make any picks--guess they got tied up elsewhere.

You and I beat all those people.

Any of the high finishers care to elaborate on picks? I love when the winner of the contests at ASD give their reasoning.

On CD dirt, I was concentrating on horses who would run close to the lead,
but not on it. That gave me Calculator, Taris, and Gun Runner. I played
Forevamo because I thought Sharp Azteca would burn out. Wrong.

Both tracks played fair - especially the turf.
Couldn't decide between Divisidero and Tourist - luckily I chose right.
Divisidero had a bad trip last out - Prado found lots of trouble.
There was no way he would be 15-1 like the M/L.

I had Chad Brown's other horse in the race he won for Ramsey.
Thought there would be more pace to close into - didn't happen.
Nice call by those who had the winner - he was the contest separator.

My best bet of the day was the Belmont race on soft turf.
:4: Smooth Daddy ran huge on an easy lead (25 quarter, 51 half)
I thought he would hold on for $32 more win money, but Shug's
Ironicus is a better horse running in conditions not ideal for him.
He should win some nice races this summer.

All in all, a fun contest.
Best I could have done was second.
The Maestro man was dialed in, and way too strong.
