Actress Patty Duke, who won a best Supporting Actress Oscar at age 15 for her performance as the young Helen Keller in the original movie version of The Miracle Worker (for which her co-star, Anne Bancroft (later Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate, as well as being Mrs. Mel Brooks), won Best Actress as Helen's Teacher, Annie Sullivan), and who also played identical cousins (one American, the other British) in The Patty Duke Show, as well as being married at one point to John Astin of The Addams Family, has died at age 69. (A hot dog must have finally made her really lose control.)

I always told my fellow special education teachers to watch for the plate smashing scene at the dinner table in "The Miracle Worker" and how Anne Bancroft's character responded as one way to deal with severe behavior issues.
She also had her own emotional issues with a bi-polar diagnosis. She is also the mother of Sean Astin of "Rudy" fame.
R.I.P., Ms.Duke

Patty Duke's death is being used to call attention to the condition from which she died -- sepsis (a reaction to infection -- in Patty's case from a ruptured intestine -- that leads to systemic organ failure). It is being described as "the most common condition you've never heard of", and is reportedly the ninth-leading cause of disease-related deaths in the country.
