Comedian/actor/writer/producer Garry Shandling, star of the cable series It's Garry Shandling's Show and The Larry Sanders Show, as well as the emcee of the Emmys and Grammys on multiple occasions and a guest host on The Tonight Show several times during Johnny Carson's absences, has died of undisclosed causes at a hospital in Los Angeles at age 66.

Garry Shandling and Jerry Seinfeld are two guys who were "discovered" doing great stand-up on Johnny Carson. That they went on to create two of the best TV comedies I ever watched is nice. And appropriate.

According to the link, he told a doctor friend who had made a house call to examine him on the evening before he died that he was experiencing aches and shortness of breath (but with no mention of chest pains), and the doctor had advised him to go to the emergency room the next day, if his symptoms continued. He went into cardiac arrest at home at 10:30 AM the next morning before making it to the hospital.

Garry Shandling's personal physician has refused repeated requests to sign Shandling's death certificate. According to the doctor, Shandling was in fine condition (although he hadn't examined him in over a year). The coroner's office has subpoenaed medical records and blood work from the emergency room where Shandling was pronounced dead, and is investigating.
