what does this have to do with racing?

from the article:

"Two percent would go to New Jersey's struggling horse racing industry and to municipalities and counties where the new casinos are located."

Do you know how much money that casino would make if it was a real Las Vegas type casino ?

2 pct of that is a LOT of money

And then they take the 2% away.

SRU can you remember to bump this thread when that happens in 2028.

a casino in the Meadowlands would be a license to print money....
20 million people live within a one hour drive/train trip of the Sports Complex....
Unfortunately there are provisions in the measure that I find objectionable.
The major one is that the casino must be operated by a current Atlantic City casino license holder....And that a portion of the new casino's revenue must go to AC.....
I think these issues were added to make the referendum more politically palatable to south Jersey politcos who are married to AC....Schmucks.....I say, if AC can't make it on its own, let the marketplace decide its fate../....Same as what many are saying about the horse racing industry.

Jersey voters would have to approve them taking the 2% away.

could not be done by legislation alone.

Just a tidbit of info on Jonathan Goldsmith who portrays the most interesting man in the world. From Wikipedia:

In March 2016, Dos Equis announced Goldsmith's retirement from the role, with a commercial sending him on a one-way journey to Mars amid much acclaim, and the narration: "His only regret is not knowing what regret feels like".

If they build only one casino at the Meadowlands, it will be so crowded you will not want to play there. Pretty sure the minimums at the tables would be high too. Anyone remember when Resorts casino opened in AC and the place was always crowded? Same thing here. But I live within 45 minutes of the Big M and still hope this comes to fruition.

You say that like its a hard to do. An industry that supports 100,000 jobs at most. Versus over a million New Jersey voters in a Presidential Election Year.

I don't know whats better the guy looking through the garbage can seeing if "he" may have dropped a winning ticket in there or a security guard knowing anything not even the racing commission or the Governor knew? JTFF, not a jab at you at all but just funny how many listen to people with little to no knowledge of where the casino would go and when.

He has no ownership in any AC casinos. He is also suing to have his named removed from any casino still using it. Most likely Borgata and Harrahs will do a joint venture.

My money is on Wynn. He's passed on Philly and other spots down in the Mid-Atlantic. I think this is where he jumps in. Plus he has no stake in AC while almost all the other casino companies do. I think he'd be interested in jumping in here and trying to bury AC, Harrah's, Mohegan Sun and Parx.

Didn't take it as a jab.

He (head of security) swore up and down that Xanuda was being built and all the construction was taking place (at the time in 2004 ish) because a casino would go up in the Meadowlands.

Who knows. Maybe that was the plan all along but the AC boys greased fatso into stopping it for a few years. That does sound about right.

Borgata and Harrahs also have been looked at as possible candidates as the North Jersey casino operaters.

Who knows. Maybe that was the plan all along but the AC boys greased fatso into stopping it for a few years. That does sound about right. That was a rumor and the other one floating around now is the old racing facility at the Meadowlands would be the template for a multi level facility and Pegasus would be used as a VLT facility because it was pre-wired for that use. Since all of this is new and as mentioned Christie made sure the AC casinos were "taken" care of and no new casinos or Jai Alai frontons would be built in North Jersey(fronton was going to go into Asbury Park)so AC became a casualty of poor planning and stiff competition from Parx, Delaware and The Sands in Bethlehem and World at Aqueduct(Philly also). Now NJ sees it has the most desirable piece of Real Estate casino wise in the northeast so the time has come to put a casino in the Meadowlands or Jersey City or both.

The Meadowlands is a much better spot due to the existing NJ Transit train stop, which is easily accessible from NYC (currently with a train change in Secaucus, though I wonder if a direct line would ultimately be possible). Public transportation to Jersey City from NYC right now would be via a light rail, which is a glorified subway, albeit above ground and cleaner.

It has been a long road, but ive thought this for years when Gural bought the building. I dont think anyone in their right mind would spend something like $90 million on a new building for harness racing these days without the casino/slot subs. I do believe if this passes, the T-breds will run on a regular basis and not just the horrible turf meet they run now. They would have to pay to do the track maintenance to switch the surface over, but it will be a dirt/turf meet with the added money

Gural isn't the easiest of individuals to deal with when he owns the rights to something. My guess is dirt racing comes back in 2017 once the casino is operating on a limited basis, just VLTs no table games then the rest of the full service casino will slowly develop over a one or two year period.

Well, no doubt the gaming floor space will rival Mohegan Sun....It would actually have to be larger....
And yes, i anticipate the weekday mins on the tables will be $10 and weekend mins $15. Weekend evenings the bulk of the tables will be $25 mins. That's my guess.
One thing I have to wonder if there will be a a charge to park your vehicle. First casino in the nation to charge for parking. NO validation..Remember, this is New Jersey. Where everything is expensive.....Just because....
Yeah, it's steep. But it will keep out the riff raff.

One key part of the proposal. The new casino may only be built and managed by an existing AC casino license holder. So unless Wynn gets his name on a license in AC, he's out as a potential builder ion Northern NJ...Sucks.
But the only way that miserable crotchety old fart Sweeney would sign off on this is if an AC interest was in on it.

The only threat is how much of the NIMBY vote gets to the polls.
As most of us know, people in New Jersey are in general opposed to everything..
If the state was flattened by a natural disaster and it would have to be rebuilt from scratch, they'd probably be opposed to the reconstruction of their own town.

The problem isn't Christie. Its Prieto and Sweeney..These two have many friends whose best interests are not with competition in North Jersey....Anyway, I would imagine now that it's in the hands of the very fickle and unpredictable voters of New Jersey, we shall see.
Quite frankly, I think they could ef up a pot of boiling water...
it took almost 20 years of trying just to get those idiots to pass a Sunday racing bill
