Finger Lakes started out with a 35% purse hike this season in anticipation of the influx of VLT cash. They just upped purses another 15% this week. Money is pouring in!
$4000 claimers are running for $8K now. Many purses are up the $20K range now and horses and trainers are starting to shopw up every week. NYRA is sending a slew of new runners. Average purse per day is up to about $97K, up from $60K last year.
Full flelds are now commonplace. Area businesses are booming, and the whole area is undergoing a postive growth cycle.
Live handle is up 25%.
So what are the horsemen complaining about?
With 10-12 horses in the field, up to 7 owners per race get no checks! USed to be with 6 horse fields, most owners could count on a check for their slugs, with no talents or class.
Now, you are seeing horses dropping into the bottom to run for $8K purses that are not-repeat-are not- negative calss dropos. It is economically feasible to claime a horse, ship into FL, drop if from $10-15K into a $4K and win a good purse, lose the horse, and make money. There are actually many horses left out of races everyday, so they might drop just to get a race. FL is considering adding more races to the cards to accomedate the huge list of potential starters.
Nice problems to have, eh?

Tom,

Sounds very similar to the Charles Town story of the late '90's

Seriously, though, Turning Stone casino is a little over an hour away, and Vernon Downs is next door to that.
Buffalo Raceway, and a couple of casinos in the Buffalo/Niagra Falls area, and Batavia Downs, maybe next year.
And now, with the new Fast Ferry, Toronto and all its opportunities is only a two hour boat ride away, and they are trying to get slots on the Ferry as well.
And don't forget the NYS lottery, where are you need is a dollar
and a dream.
And there is Friday night poker game around the corner from me, tell them Sonny sent ya.
:D

When at the racetrack, I get a lot of people complaining to me about all the money they've lost at the slot machines, in that area of the track. I keep telling them..."Don't play slot machines, you can't beat a fixed percentage game like that, or any other casino game over the long run, where the house has a edge on every bet." They don't want to hear the truth and a lot of them are back in ensuing days playing the one-armed bandits again. All they remember is that the first day they played the slot machines, they put in a quarter and won $300..."Wow!"...They probably said to themselves.

The only winners at the slot machines in the long run, are provincial or state governments and probably the top 10% of the horse racing stables, in terms of money won over the course of a year.

Betting on the horse races is enough of a challenge, trying to make a profit over a year. I may be dumb at times in certain areas of life, but I refuse to be stupid and throw away money in slot machines.

I am sure that something along the lines of what has happened at mountaineer will happen there, and sounds to have happened. the local trainers, while gladly accepting the increase in purses, will so realize that others will ship in and they cant win as easy. they willl then complain that the shippers come into town, nad take the money. meanwhile, the trainers at the mountain never complained about running a maiden $4000 horse for a $10,300 purse.

The Ontario government finally banned smoking in all buildings.
The casino at Woodbine was not exempted. The government
figured to save health dollars as a result of the legislation. The
proceeds at the casino are now down over 20% since the ban
took affect. The purses at Woodbine will now be reduced
shortly as the horseracing handle is stagnant. Well, now the
government is out the revenue from the variious casinos around
the province (including Woodbine) and no doubt lower purses
tend to beget smaller handles, which again lowers the govern-
ments take. Only time will tell the complete ramifications to
Woodbine.

Cryptic,

Our City Council here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has had the courage to increasingly ban smoking in most buildings in this city over the years. However, they wimped out on their most recent bans and gave an exemption until 2005 to bingos, bars, casinos and maybe the odd other establishment until 2005. Then there will be a total ban. Hooray! The smokers will continue to have a right in 2005..."right" outside. Tough bananas!

It took years, but our local racetrack at Northlands Park finally put a no smoking sign in the main teletheatre. The smoking addicts have increasingly been squeezed into smaller spaces at Northlands Park. Thank you to the management at Northlands Park for the cleaner air to breathe at the track. It's one of the few compliments I can give them, on how they operate the local racetrack.

T2W what the problem is people win some money and don't walk away, which is what the slot makers count on.I have won money for several years on these machines, but as I don't win money on a race and bet it all on the next race,I do the same on these machines.
