You're always going to have to do updates when you purchase a new computer with the newest operating system. Even most of the older ones still require updates until the point they are no longer supported.

So what you're telling me is that even if I buy a new Windows 10 computer at the beginning of 2018, I will need to do all the updates or most of the updates?

Depends on when the computer was last updated.
It might be new to you in 2018, but not updated since 2016.

Or until MS stops supporting it. Apparently Win 10 is not going to be the forever operating system as was hyped.

MS now says mainstream support will end in 2020 and extended support in 2025.

A couple of years ago I bought a new in box Asus laptop with Windows 7. It took 12-14 hours to download all the updates.

It's kind of difficult to reply easily to this, but the very short answer is that Windows 10 is the last VERSION of windows. There won't be anymore version numbers, basically, future windows will just be called Windows. And it will be a 'service'. It will power different devices like HoloLens, Xbox, PCs, phones etc. Hope this answered your question (but it actually may raise even more questions, lol)

So, if future versions of Windows will just be called "windows", how will a user know if they have the most up to date version? Will it be called Windows 2025 etc?

You will get every update whether you want it or not.
That is the master plan - one OS that they have total control over. And you will pay for it.
