There's a thread going about Penn & Parx--the consensus seemed to be if they both faded away, they wouldn't be missed much. I chimed in with how much I enjoy both those tracks, due to the blatant trainer/horse manipulations. I enjoy the detective work rooting out the "coloring" of form, horses entered at the wrong distances, classes, etc...to give the appearance to the untrained eye--of a hapless trainer with a broken-down horse.
Well it appears "coloring form"....is probably the most innocent maneuver going on.
This two-line excerpt sums it up:
"In a sentencing recommendation, the U.S. Attorney said Lytel accepted bribes from 14 different trainers. The trainers' names have not been disclosed by the government, which is continuing the investigation."
Funny thing is---this guy is only a Racing Secretary's Assist. Also NO TRAINERS were identified.

I wonder if a certain trainer who always seems to find a 6 horse field is on that list?

Because this many trainers are on the list you would have to imagine this bribe guy was the aggressor in collecting. He could have told them life might get miserable for their barn if they didn't pay. Hard to come down on a trainer if he's paying hush money, sometimes you're just in a position in life to have to play ball.

In 2015 only 28 trainers ran 100 or more horses at the Pig Penn.
Eliminating the inept, like those 5% vanity stable operators, and it shouldn't be too hard to figger out who is still sleeping with one eye open at night.
You only live once.......and spending some in a Federal Pen is well deserved.

Maybe all the trainers were not stabled at Penn. The wire transfer that prompted this investigation originated in Kentucky.....

That wire transfer came from an owner correct?

It's never been mentioned who wired the money.
Maybe some jockey's agent. They're the lowest of the low.

This Assist. Secretary got 4 months... no early release on a federal sentence less than a year, he'll do every day of 4 mos.
He'll probably do his time in one of those "Club Feds" they send embezzlers and stock market crooks to.

Oh.....was hoping you were gonna say you're Tony Kornheiser. :D
You seem well-mannered and somewhat sober..so I suppose some Jockey Agents are ok

Sadly there's a lot more of this going on at these tracks than there are subtle trainer moves...all part of the joys of PA racing. :)

P.A. would rain holy hell on anyone mentioning any names at this point--but I'll say one of my favorites---with all the heat @ Penn ---is having a tough time finding the winner's circle past few weeks.

Another scandal at the Pig Penn is soon to break.
Someone embezzled from the horseman's PAC account.
Gypsies, tramps and thieves.

Do you think anyone will do anything about it?
Who will take the lead and how long will it take .... the track, owners, FBI, M Gill etc. to do something?

whodo....this is incredible the amount of cheating, larceny, lying going on @ Penn. Who's to blame----the TOP MGMT is to blame--as it always is. When some low-level official is going to the bighouse, and everyone else stays behind the curtain--you can only come to one conclusion.
This is almost like 3rd-world corruption--it extends in all directions.
Here's another link to even MORE indictments and charges, not even related to this Assist Secretary

Some trainers lurk in wait for short fields. The most devious will extract promise of a favor just for entering a horse they had planned all along to put in.
The bartering process sometimes needed to fill race cards requires officials sharp enough to venture safely into grey areas-but with the integrity to respect ethical boundaries. People who, no matter what they do, act only with the racing program's best interest at heart.

Why not have a purse scale, the bigger the field the bigger the purse? If the purses are the SAme in 6 horse fields as they are in 10 horse fields, it's smart to wait if you can.

Just in case you haven't noticed how cynical I've been regarding Penn, these things have been reported on here for several years. I don't understand why anyone still bets there. You can use the search function or ask Shemp since he seems to be very aware of Penn. Or, search for Michael Gill rants.

Oh I still bet there....will be glad when the heat is off, so my trainers can get back to their "normal" shenanigans.
And make no mistake, THOSE shenanigans I speak of...are an accepted and perfectly legal part of the game.

Unless you're a part of the "shenanigans" I think you're really hurting yourself when betting your selections.

wolf just signed a bill to supposedly help this racing but the only marketing plan that will help is to give a rebate of AT LEAST TEN PERCENT on all bets to anyone wagering on this stuff with a player's card....... PERIOD!!

If this was truly reform, it would have closed the Pig Penn and Presque Isle.

you forgot parx.
71% decline and the apathy of "horsemen" (like your pal bobo) during the juan carlos beattie era had a lot to do with it.

I'm hurting myself when I lose, agreed. But don't forget----you, me--everyone of this forum---is a BETTOR. Without US BETTORS....this whole thing disappears tomorrow. Racing's seedy underbelly is no different than any other sector--public or private. Do ya REALLY think....say, the NFL-- is just so squeeky clean?
Just the way life is, man....and you really want to guilt-shame me, for participating?

Not trying to guilt shame you but, as I stated unless you're part of the shenanigans when you lose and they're trying to pull something then the loss is really on you. It sounds like you think you're smarter than whoever and you like to stick around even in a crooked game. So far there is only suspicion with some actually being caught i.e., Vets, trainers, now an asst. secretary etc. It does appear widespread. As I recall, M. Gill thought it included some of the (track mgmt., government officials and even the FBI).

From the above: "The law also repeals the 10% advance deposit wagering tax that had been challenged in the courts."
Not enough I know, but it is at least a start. Think how many residents can move back into Pennsylvania now. :)
BTW as expected, the year-round OTB at the Timonium Fairgrounds was officially approved. Hope it improves purses.

Anyone that places a bet, is indirectly endorsing, funding, and perpetuating the "shenanigans".
Jump down of that cosmic soap-box and join us common folk, whodo.
I think we're done here....

I don't think people who don't break laws or cheat are endorsing the illegal activity by betting.
