Checking for updates stuck

Got my refurbished laptop with W7, been trying to update for 2 days 1st I thought it was the WiFi connection,so I plugged directly into Ethernet cable,ran 2 hrs and still says checking for updates
Ran "fixit" program,didn't help All I get from the seller is "it takes time" well I'm out of time lol
Any ideas appreciated

I don't know if it is your issue or not but a couple of years ago when I bought a new laptop (still packed in its original box) with Windows7 it took me about 18 hours to download and install all the back updates. Once it finished everything has been fine.
