Our first issue of the year contains an article by Melissa Nolan about 3-year-olds that are flying under the radar, a TimeformUS analysis of layoff horses, and Lenny Moon's case study of effective takeout rates based on a pick 5 carryover at Golden Gate Fields in December 2015.

Also included is a piece by Barry Meadow explaining what's a good bet, Neal Benoit's interview with NYRA's Maggie Wolfendale, a look at the past, present, and future of the National Handicapping Championship, and much more.

I enjoy these issues--especially Lenny Moon's articles--he seems to relate well to regular schmucks like me. Been a subscriber of his newsletter for years.

Lenny went to the same high school as I did.

They do a good job putting it together. I like it because the price is right :)

Honestly, it would be the only magazine I would dish out money for regularly.

I had not read one of these in a while before this one. All I can say is, "WOW!" What a publication it has become!

Great job!

One reason I post here is to prevent atrophy of my (limited) writing skills.

Stephen King once likened it to working a muscle out. "Just 15 min per day will make it stronger," he said.

The best advice I ever got on writing, by the way, was: be lively, be precise.
And edit your efforts as if you hate words.

I also like writing. It's an interest and (somewhat neglected) ambition of mine.

This post was today's workout.

This didn't make it in the magazine b/c the event ended after we published but HANA's Charlie Davis finished third and wrote this piece about his experience and talked about some of his strategies and preparation for the event.

Charlie is using their beta version; it's supposed to be available for the public soon.

They have a Twitter account with updates here - https://twitter.com/OptixEQ

Thanks PA, and sorry I don't have more info on the trip notes. Just be patient with them because they'll be out soon hopefully.

And those PP's I use are awesome CJ! Not sure if you've heard of them...

One thing of note regarding my mentioning of TimeformUS PP's, Trip Notes, and Jcapper. I'm not paid by any of the 3 companies I mentioned, but each provided something at the NHC where I would've had a worse score without them. There's no greater endorsement of a product than it being used successfully in my opinion, and with so much stuff out there, I figured I'd highlight what I use.

Not to detract from anything else out there, that's just what works for me.
