So today we got Sunland, Turf Paradise and a handful of harness tracks.

Today's got to the day of the year with the smallest handle on horse racing right?

Not counting holidays of course.

Today is the bottom?

Louisiana Downs, Portland Meadows and Mahoning Valley are also running today.January Tuesdays have always been small potatoes.

At least Sam Houston will be added next week, for what it's worth.

Tuesdays have been a pleasant surprise for Mahoning Valley and its new found followers. Lack of competition and large fields have resulted in some 1 Million plus handle days.

The key is to take these days off and start working on tomorrow or the following days races, you can never watch enough replays or prepare enough.

That's why I was disappointed Parx is taking the winter off. I would much rather they took a few months off in the summer when there are plenty of other tracks running on Monday and Tuesday.

You ain't NEVER lying, SRU....these "dog days" force a horse player to get caught up on research, angles, update bookkeeping. All the stuff we claim we don't have time for.

Good post

At least Sam Houston will be added next week, for what it's worth.

I recall looking at Houston last year---they don't seem to go anywhere in the off-season--just open up the barn and turn 'em loose when the new meet starts.

I couldn't figure out how to 'cap a race with all 8 or 9 horses coming back off a long layoff. I'm positive insiders have angles galore, I just didn't have any....so moved on.

Anyone with tips for betting Houston the 1st few weeks?

Thanks. I make a good point or good post by accident once in a while due to sheer volume, I figure with 8 million posts a day I might stumble onto a good point once in a blue moon :D

I call it my 'ky derby theory' which simply is that you are allowed to turn any race or race card into your own personal 'ky derby' by spending days working on the card. For example you could determine that the jan 19th card from Sunland is your personal derby and spend the next 6 days working just on the card. Skip the next 6 days and 'point' to that one card, you'll be the most prepared Person betting those races that day, you'll have time to deeply research everything, watch every replay of every animal, etc.

Now it's not likely someone will go this far out and skip this many days, but you could if you wanted to be only betting races and cards where you are prepared more than almost anyone.

This time of year is great. I'm usually done doing all the pace and speed figures for the entire day before bed time!

Turf Paradise was very weird with multi-race exotic payouts today on what was a very chalky day.

$0.50 Pick 3 3 of 3 3,4/6/3,6,11 $8.90
$0.50 Pick 4 4 of 4 8/3,4/6/3,6,11 $25.55
$1.00 Pick 5 5 of 5 4,5/8/3,4/6/3,6,11 $109.10
$1.00 Pick 6 6 of 6 1/4,5/8/3,4/6/3,6,11 $45.00
$1.00 Pick 6 5 of 6 1/4,5/8/3,4/6/3,6,11 $2.70

Even the .50 cent base Pick 5 paid more than the Pick 6, as the first leg of the Pick 6 had a 1/9 shot. With the lack of tracks it seemed to draw all of the attention.

I cashed the Late Pick 4 on a $24 ticket

Were you one of the lucky ones to get some of that crazy money late yesterday @ TUP? Even the late DD ( :8: :8: ) paid almost $4k! I know someone walking out of there early, bought a ticket, probably like they alway do--with the :8: :8: double, because those are "their numbers".

Somebody did hit the late P-3 :4: :8: :8: for almost $13k--isn't it a damn shame the govt feels entitled to just TAKE 20% off the top of that--AFTER the 25% takeout has already been....TAKEN OUT?

And as an Arizona resident, if I used an ADW I lose another 5% to the state as well. I didn't play yesterday, and I regret it. Today was chalk fest on top, and I was covered to the long shots that filled out the board. Good handicapping, no breaks today.

Anyone with tips for betting Houston the 1st few weeks?[/QUOTE]

I run into this every Spring at Canterbury.

Many horses, especially MN breds, haven't raced since August.

Regardless of how a horse did LAST year, and regardless how many and the quality of workouts, recent races are my #1 factor.

Last year a horse who lost by 10+ lengths at Prairie Meadows in a prep for 2015 raced opening day against horses off 7+ months. The horses in 2014 ran faster better races and won more often, but the horse with the recent race won at over 10-1.

It might not have won if the others had 30-60 day lay offs.

By the way, I bet the BEST horse. The best 2014 horse as it turned out, and lost.

I'm sure you've read that a race is equal to xx amount of workouts.

I want to add--Sometimes a horse off a long lay off does win.

When a horse like that beats me I wondered if there was a better way than work outs and trainer win % with lay off horses.

I got the brilliant (?) idea that a horse off a 6 month lay off is similar to a first time starter. So I checked the breeding of horses who won off long lay offs.

Many were A and B horses.

I used to use Bris Sire Stats, now use Mazur's Sire Ratings.

I don't use this if the race is on turf.

This is only an added factor, to consider with work outs, trainer stats and other factors you use.
